THE AALTOS: In Scandinavia (ECR SW) M-/M- 1400:-
Very rare (you see their other albums sometime but not this one) and unique album by Finnish family of two brothers and sisters who recorded and had this one released in Sweden. They later emigrated (or fled depending on the storyteller) to the US when the Swedish Maranatha church was scandalously exposed and their leader prosecuted. This album is their acknowledged best and it features some amazingly haunting “garage folk psych” sung in English. No hype and for the right well travelled ears this one really delivers deep psychedelic emotions. Lat night favourite in my pad always. The gatefold sleeve is of course also fantastic adding to the vibe and looking satanically sinister.
ADDICTS: Sing (Word US 65) M-/Vg 250:-
Still in shrink and including the original Word inner bag. Totally bizarre and perfectly frame able item as you wont really be listening to it…but what a sleeve! These "nine former addicts" toured the U.S. in a van and gave impromptu and ad-libbed performances of their personal lives of junkiedom (and their subsequent spiritual rejuvenation) in whatever spaces would have them. Through 11 tracks (including The Addicts March and You Are the Finger of God) we get nine ill-matched voices trying to harmonize and if you can imagine going to a baseball or hockey game and selecting nine people from the stands during the national anthem, then you already know what this will sound like. As the liner notes say, in a kind way: "The record has about it a crudeness that cannot be described...". Above the block of liner notes on the reverse of the sleeve we have a photo of the band perched on top of and around their van; to the far left of this and reaching nearly top-to-bottom of the jacket is a simple line-drawing of an extended arm about to receive the spike of a horse-loaded needle from the other hand. The imperfections of the vinyl product are overshadowed (eclipsed, trapped in a coalmine at midnight, etc) by the beautifully surreal cover-art, art which is bordering unknowingly on self-parody, and unsurpassed in it's genre.
GOLDEN JOE BAKER: Live at the Brothers 4 (Private US) rw Ex/Ex 400:-
Weird and beautiful, fat, balding guy makes he's dream come through vanity pressing. The sleeve is priceless with him in a silver suit and mantel on top of the Brothers 4 pub. Very rare private press that delivers the goods.
THE BLUE'S MEN - Prohibido Prohibir (Mystic Re) NEW 130:-
So you thought you heard it all? Well, I bet you haven't heard this one! The Blue's Men were from Argentina and their sole LP release is the rarest 60s beat/garage /weirdo release from over there. The Blue's Men's sound is great garage rock with deranged bursts of fuzztone guitar and bizarre lyrics (in English) with song titles like "The Day the World Fried My Brain" and "Reflections of a Sun Freakout"! This might lead you to think it's psych smaltz but no, no, no it's garage rock and deranged stuff from hell, with a lead singer sounding like Elvis o.d'ing on cough syrup! A one of a kind monster record you need real bad! 10" Ltd 500 copies.

J.D. BRENNAN + GOLD FEVER: Guitar Slinger (Scyne US 90) M-/M- 700:-
The two rarest and way most desirable by this amazing 50 year old "real people" rocker who manage to sneak in a powerful psychedelic edge to his echoed rockabilly twist, garagey hot guitars, loner vocals, barband sleaze, that only adds to the overall haunted lysergic feel. Mr. Brennan plays a mean guitar and sings and is backed by a full band called Goldfever. This is real emotional, the guy really puts himself on the line and sings and plays as if every note would be his last. The LPs were done in pressings of 200 copies only. Some copies were around 15 years ago but are now long gone.
FRANCES CANNON: Th Singing Psychic (US) bc Ex/M- 700:-
Cannon, a Dallas, TX. based clairvoyant, becomes "psychic" after being hit by a lumber truck in 1979. She makes this strange deep real people psychedelic album in 1987. The combination of her southern, little-girl, speak-sing drawl and guitar/keyboard-propelled psych-ish arrangements made tracks like 'Stars', 'Discoveries' and Spaceships Have Landed (Rock)'' simply irresistible. Sure, occasionally the plotlines became a little difficult to follow; witness 'Lincoln's Ghost' which somehow managed to weave together Presidential elections, Libya's Muammar Ghadaffi, and extraterrestrials. Mind you, her voice wil probably irritate pets and anyone in to the mainstream, but anyone with an ounce of musical adventure in their souls should get a kick out of this. Add in the off-the-wall lyrical content, exemplified by tracks like 'Come Step thru Space' and 'Spirals of Time', UFOs and extraterrestrials remained popular topics. Besides, it was almost impossible to not be won over by Cannon's unique and largely upbeat outlook on life. One of a kind!
IMMY CATALANO: Jimmy Does It All Alone (Private US) rw Vg+++/G- to EX
New Jersey one-man-band lounge act vanity pressing. “This guy used to do an organ single at "The Pub" in the Allwood section of Clifton, NJ. The trumpet was the last thing he added. He used a Hammond as his main axe with a then-new Mini Moog on top, a grand piano on his right, and either an Allen Trio or some sort of Conn on his left. The last I'd heard of him he was at the 7 Sisters in Perth Amboy.” All of side A is pretty much trashed by a severe scratch except the last track which miracously survived unharmed…and that is the track worth getting the album for (and the cool sleeve of course); a great version of “Evil Ways”.

CINCINNATI JOE & MAD LYDIA (River Witch US 71) srw Ex/Ex 1300:-
Legendary, special and unique higherkey "real people" LP that goes all over the map from psych to funk femme folkpsych all with their own perspective and filtered through a half empty Holiday Inn lounge vibe. Quit unexplainable but very enjoyable.
BILL CLOONEY: The Wheels of Time (Phonography US 75) ss re toc wobc VG+/M- 300:-
Fantastic real people lounge psych vanity masterpiece here. And totally unknown too it seems. I’ve been looking for a spare for ages since scored Paul Ms original copy. ten years later here it is. So where to begin? Well, you firstly flip for the awesomely ridiculous front sleeve pic with Bill decked out in the worst imaginable Elvis impersonator style gear complete with leopard vest and chains…and a pose that will have you in stitches. The backside pics reveals a more deep loner kind of one man band with Bill playing various instruments and hanging out by his trailer. Onwards to the sounds; among his self penned songs the following two are my favourites: “Use Me”; an utterly berserk masochist song underscored by some great fuzz guitar and the loner garage psych lounge of “My Baby’s Gone”. And then we have the utterly bonkers version of “Sunny”. This must rank as the ultimate lounge band version of this staple song. Complete with a long instrumental Hammond organ and fuzz guitar duel. Phew! This album surely is a mind blower and my copy will sit forever in my vanity pressing collection.

MICHAEL FARNETI: Good Morning Kisses (Companion US re) NEW 200:-
South Florida and recorded in 1976, Michael Farneti's Good Morning Kisses is a brilliant vanity press head-scratcher. Indeed, it seems Farneti is channelling Van Dyke Parks and Scott Walker amongst others in his wide-eyed enthusiastic and sometimes melancholic songs. Without a hint of irony, Farneti exudes a wonderfully naive charm with strange (and perhaps unintentionally humorous) lyrics. It has falsetto harmonies, Theremin flourishes, and washed out orchestral yacht rock arrangements, deep psych, exotica and disco. Golden moments for any fan of unique musical visionaries await!

FROM BRITAIN WITH BEAT (Modern Sounds US) soc ss tobc Vg/G+ 200:-
Here‚s the absolute worst 60s British invasion, Beatles rip-off lp from USA. The sleeve is worth framing as it is so ridiculous. 4 guys in longhair wigs, guitars and drums goofing about in front of a brick wall. It is so phony you wont believe it. Rare.
RICK GROSSMAN (Thunderbolt US 78) Ex/M- 400:-
This 1978 private pressing, and legendary boner LP, is totally in a world of it's own. Part of the appeal is his strange singing style and lyrics, almost like he has some subtle speech impediment, with weird phrasing, I can't think of any other LP to file this next to. Music is garagy/folkrocky with a bit of a Caribbean flow at times, weavy westcoasty guitar leads, odd rhythms, just like the vocals, I can't think of another LP like this musically. Has cosmic moves, too, with songs like "Mellow Heaven Clout" (about a girl with lyrics like "I used to be a Kellog's man, go from table tasting brand and brand..") and a great wiggy groove. "The Key" (lyrics..."For you finally see the plane you're on, perceptions crystallize, and you see each person on their plane, moving through their time..."). "The Magic We All Hide", "Running Wild" the whole LP is consistently in it's own world and he has the strangest way of communicating. Album is titled "Hot Romance" on Thunderbolt Productions # 8094N2 in odd cover with pic of him lying on the grass. Not overtly crazy or wacko, more subtle twilight-zone style of just being off enough to be even stranger than an intentionally weird LP, outsider style where he probably wasn't trying to be freaky, but naturally comes across that way! First spare copy I've had in long time.
HEARTBEAT LULLABY (Private US) ss srw Ex/Ex 140:-

MEL HENKE: La Dolce Henke (Warner Bros. US) Ex/Ex 400:-
A classic beatnik curio from 1962. Mel Henke got his start as an advertising copywriter, and he uses his skill in that area to create a not so subtle, sexually provocative lounge record that will leave you on the floor laughing. The lush, elaborate arrangements (often driven by Henke's own great piano playing) are stupendous. But the stars here are the songs, skits really, which are just this side of being obscene. This is Jet Age, swingin' bachelor pad (and Cad) music to its ultimate limits. "The musical equivalent of 'Playboy' magazine!"
KENNETH HIGNEY: Attic Demonstration (Kebrutney US 1976) M-/M- 1500:- “
The classic original all time fave 1976 private press album that defines the genre.loner/outsider/psychedelic album “Often considered the Holy Grail of "real people" records, Kenneth Higney's "Attic Demonstration" was never actually intended to be an official release. It was recorded in New York City by Higney and his accompanist Gordon Gaines (R.I.P.) as a vehicle with which to sell Higney's songs to other artists and was only pressed to vinyl in 1976 when he grew tired of duplicating cassette tapes. Apparently the Jandekian dissonance of the "A. Demo." sound was an unintended by-product of the one take demo sessions. Be that as it may, "Attic Demonstration" is a strange sonic world all of it's own. It is neither too weird to be unappealing to "regular" music listeners nor is it one of those "discoveries" that leaves you wondering what all the hype was about. Acoustic guitar ballads of nearly atonal desolation mix readily with rock 'n' roll numbers featuring hiccuping drums and alien sounding and fuzzy electric guitar. Higney's vocals are by turns sneering and mournful as he sings about lost love and the desire for fame all filtered through his uniquely bent worldview. Although a few ads were placed for the record in The Village Voice and The Aquarian, the fame that Higney sought eluded him (a semi-positive review in Trouser Press notwithstanding). That is, until the album was discovered and distributed by record dealer Paul Major.”; Original first pressing with the Kebruteny Lyndhurst, New Jersey address on a sticker on the back cover.”

DR. JACK VAN IMPE: Hell Without Hell (Diadem US) ss rw wobc Vg++/Ex 250:-
Jack Van Impe is an American televangelist based in Michigan whose main basic message is the world will end sometime soon. Van Impe has been called the "Walking Bible" for his ability to memorize all of the Bible verses and to come up with a Bible verse to fit the sermon or message he is delivering. This album with it’s apocalyptic fire and brimstone sermon was released sometimes in the mid-1960s. Amazing artwork too.
ANNA-LISA INGEMANSON (ALJ SW 73) Ex-/Ex- 500:-
Really rare incredibly strange “Sunkit-style” private press monster album from Sweden early 70s. Anna-Lisa Ingemanson (1909 - 2003) was a pedicurer who loved music in general and singing in particular. Devoted as she was, she recorded and released a lot of music in true D.I.Y. fashion. With total lack of rhythmic sense - and singing voice - she fearlessly took on popular music gems and made them her own. The hired musicians politely asked not to be credited on the album sleeves. No wonder. Like a little tone deaf angel she takes the lyrics far away from the melody that stops existing after a minute. A fantastic and natural entertainer

KATHY & TONY: Sings for Lovers (Cove US) M-/M 260:-
Another needle in the haystack lounge mover. Husband and wife team of Tony and Kathy Rich, a guitar and singing lounge duo that entertained vacationers in the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania. For most of the recording, the tunes are presented in simple but serviceable arrangements. With vocals, electric guitar and some kind of rhythm box holds down the beat, Kathy and Tony trade off lead vocals, and Tony holds the whole thing together with his guitar accompaniment. Miserlou (with vocals non the less) is the stand out track. It goes way surreal with sneaky eastern fuzz guitar action. In shrink, autographed

LITTLE MARCY: Marcy Sings (Word US) ss rw Vg+++/Vg+ 130:-
”Ventriloquism + evangelism = religion for dummies. Scariest is the notion that the target is innocent children. Insidious or ridiculous, puppets indeed have been used to lure the too-young-to-resist into the ways of blind faith. This is not okay. What is Little Marcy? Failed trombonist & singer Marcy Tigner, Evangelical, child ventriloquist act, Star of Word, Zondervan records & film, Model for a doll, hand puppet, etc. Yes, all of these. A native of Wichita, Kansas, Marcy Tigner studied piano and trombone as a child, eventually making it to the Portland, Oregon Junior Symphony. An avid Christian, she determined to sing gospel and went through three voice teachers before her husband Everett suggested she exploit, rather than try to improve, her "child-like" voice. Her debut record was a hit within her church circuit, but she felt a little weird singing with her child's voice. With help from Miss America 1965 Vonda van Dyke, she developed the kiddie-ventriloquism act. What is the latter-day appeal of Marcy records? Like Heino, voice of Germany as the rest of the world would rather it not be, Marcy has something scary and repressive to say. That she ever inspired real children is irrelevant, at least compared to the sneakiness of using a childlike device to evangelize. The medium is the message, and the medium is nightmarish. Compared to the Maranatha crowd and other "shepherding" churches (really cults, mostly on the West Coast), Marcy records are fairly harmless. But one has to wonder the effect on children of material that never fails to clear a room of sentient, critically thinking adults. It sounds horrible. The message mostly is horrible. The cuteness is horrible. Little Marcy is horrible. There are other albums of this type which may be even worse, but Marcy is the most prevalent. Approach with caution.” – from Hyp Records

ATTILIO MINEO: Man in Space with Sounds (SUB-081-LP) NEW 220:-
Limited edition of 500 copies only. Recorded in 1951 but only released in conjunction with the 1962 Seattle World's Fair as the musical accompaniment to the Bubbelator, a transparent, spherical elevator that carried as many as 150 passengers, Attilio Mineo's Man in Space with Sounds remains one of the most foreboding and complex records in the cosmic exotica canon. A dark, dissonant exploration of interstellar travel rooted in the avant-garde ethos of Cage and Stockhausen, this is music that's alien not only in its presentation but also in its orientation, fusing traditional instrumentation and sound effects to the point that one becomes indistinguishable from the other. Electronic elements pulse, hum, and sputter their way to complete domination of Mineo's sonic palette, depicting a bleak, sterile future where mankind gives way to machinery. Man In Space With Sounds is one of those legendary LPs. A rare souvenir of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, this music served as the soundtrack to a ride called the Bubbleator, which transported fair visitors through an overview of the future, a technological utopia where science and space travel promised solutions to all of humanity’s plights. Needless to say, that future never arrived and this music (actually recorded in the early 1950s) still sounds as futuristic today as it must have back then. The all-original compositions fall somewhere between nervous Philip Glass and 1950s sci-fi movie music, arranged with string orchestra in a sometimes rhythmic, polyrhythmic, or merely ambient cloud of odd electronic space noises. Despite its intended technological optimism, the music is quite heavy and menacing, and the future ultimately feels pretty scary. Regardless, this recording proves Attilio Mineo to have been an unbelievably progressive and underappreciated composer and arranger. The amazing aural and visual content of this endearing package transcend everything. A rare, sought-after gem made accessible as a facsimile, with added bonus photos, in a limited pressing of 500 copies. Packaged for collectors by collectors.

LEONARD NIMOY: Two Sides of (DOT US) Ex/M- 280:-
Still in shrink. It’s 1967 and the original Star Trek show faces cancellation. On this his second album, Nimoy (Mr. Spock) goes deeper into Star Trek self-parody with "Highly Illogical” and "The Difference Between Us." "Spock Thoughts" suggests that a certain pointy-eared Vulcan spent at least some of his time reading posters in West Coast head shops. "Don't forget", Dot reminds us, "He was in Mission Impossible" too! "Once I Smiled" is simply one of the worst songs ever recorded; obviously inspired by "This Side of Paradise" where Spock ingests some groovy spores and lets it all hang out. "Amphibious Assault" is a thinly disguised anti-Vietnam war protest song. Side Two features one amazing artefact: The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. Not satisfied with his musical disembowelling of the most popular sci-fi series of all time, Mr. Nimoy turned his substantial talents towards the works of an elderly British fantasy literature writer. In the course of the 2 minutes 18 seconds of horror that follow, not only is the plot of the entire novel given away but Nimoy knowingly lets the listener in on what Bilbo is really smoking in his pipe down in that wacky hobbit-hole. There is also a bassoon solo. “

A really groovy leaf on the tree has caught his eye... The photographer seems to be unaware that a whole lot of vaseline has gotten onto the lense of his camera...Mr. Nimoy is still wearing the same funky outfit that he had on the back cover of "the Way I Feel"...and accidental humour can still be found in a really disturbing rendition of "Nature Boy". Even at this late date, there is a Spock hangover; the odious "Contact". Thank God for plate reverb!”

LUCIA PAMELA: In to Outer Space (L’Peg US 69/70) M-/M- 1000:-
"Amazing, unfettered, unfiltered vocal performance from Fresno, California eccentric who swears on The Bible her LP was recorded on the moon. A stone classic outsider private press LP with rickety cantina jazz backup band" For aficionados of Incredibly Strange Music, Lucia Pamela is a gift from God: a senior citizen who made a totally unknown, crudely recorded album in 1969 that sounded like a garage nursing-home band. Pamela was a former Miss St. Louis and veteran entertainer with several decades of "musical" experience under her belt by the time she recorded Into Outer Space, although there seems to be no reliable way of compiling accurate biographical data. Like the much more famous Mrs. Miller, Pamela couldn't "sing" well in the conventional sense, but sang with the confidence of one who knows she is one of the best. Into Outer Space sounds like a time-warp '20s swing band-cum ragtime-cum "rickety Cantina Jazz", fronted by a wedding-party guest who's downed too many stiff ones. Most of the material comes from the pen of Pamela herself, who devised nursery rhyme-like ditties about walking on the moon, Indian alphabet chants, the year 2000, and only slightly less cockeyed love songs. Pamela faded into obscurity and died at the age of 98 on July 25, 2002 in a hospital in Los Angeles. From the All Hail Pamela Lucia Website, the official story is: "Nearly 30 [Written in 1993] years ago Lucia Pamela loaded her pink Cadillac up with some musician friends, a slew of instruments, a weird batch of space ballads, and headed for the moon. Their mission? Not some pre-Apollo scientific space exploration, but rather the first, and possibly only, interplanetary recording session (unless, of course, you consider some of Sun Ra's early intergalactic jazz explorations). The product of this expedition was the now legendary Into Outer Space with Lucia Pamela. Lucia insists Into Outer Space was recorded on the moon. Not only that, she's not entirely happy with lunar acoustics. "The air is so thin everything sounds different up there", she once noted in an annoyed tone. Certainly those primitive recording facilities contributed to the unique sound of Lucia's crudely recorded cult classic. How to explain the sound of Into Outer Space? For starters, one critic called Lucia the "missing link between Sun Ra and the Shaggs". That's a start, but it's nowhere near the complete story. Lucia isn't nearly derivative enough to be neatly pigeonholed between other artists, no matter how out-there they may be. Approximate the following and come to your own conclusions: Into Outer Space with Lucia Pamela is the sound of a ragtime band lost in another galaxy, hopelessly whacked out on alien hallucinogens, desperately trying to pull together history's strangest concept album. Which is exactly what Into Outer Space is -- a startlingly weird concept album. The premise: Lucia pays a visit to Moontown and reports back on her findings. An Indian wedding. More oriental people than she expected. Lots of animals. No taxes. A virtual paradise. Except of course for the recording facilities.”
REFLECTIONS: The Unique Sounds of… (US) M-/M- OFFERS
Qouting Will Louivre spot on commentary here. “If you're the kind of person who buys homemade, locally-issued thrift store records in search of a more personal sound, this collection of instrumentals may be right up your alley. For us, the moods captured here are as deep and soulful as it gets for this genre. Recorded in in drummer Harold Collins' parent's living room, this is the one and only document left behind by Louisiana's Reflections, who KO'd all comers in local battle of the bands contests and worked weekends at the Holiday Inn down the road in Slidell. This was 13 year old Collins' first professional gig and his drowsy, rat-a-tat-tat jazz style lends a flavourful back beat to the selections. The deft organ work and soul-stirring horn and guitar solos from Allis Murray is what pushes this one over the top. Incredibly, she performed all three instruments at once, working the organ with a foot pedal. "Would you believe a five-piece band with only two people in it?" begins the liner notes... "We're not putting you on. The sounds you will hear on this album are two people...No double-track recording tricks, no extra help -- just two of the best musicians...playing their favourite numbers." Multi-tasking aside, what lures us are the haunting moods captured in Murray originals "Autumn in the Air" and "Evening by the Sea" and cover tunes like "Moonlight in Vermont". The rickety, upbeat jazz/surf numbers are brimming with personality as well, in fact if the whole album were made up of these, it'd still be a top thrift store keeper. Original vinyl copies are virtually non-existent”.

This one goes way beyond what one would expect. Hands down one of the most amazing and mind blowing heavy trips put on wax. "'The legacy of John Rydgren was one of the most enigmatic in radio-jock if not also record history. A Lutheran evangelist, Rydgren started a hit program called Silhouettes. As with Ken Nordine, his thoughts were highly original, ranging from quirky perceptions of the mundane to deep acid-head philosophy. Distributed to free to radio stations, Worlds of Youth and Silhouette Segments never was commercially released because of licensing difficulties. It remains an obscure and treasured memento of the radio program. The LP was given heavy airplay in Vietnam, however. Questioning life's meta assumptions within a reassuring pop context, it was a natural for soldiers. And for everyone its juxtaposition of the antipodes of hip and square continue to blow minds"

"The Hippie Version of Creation", "Search It Out" , the production dramatizes were they are, where they search...cars, a Moonkee concert, the surf, problems...represented by the train, elephants, a trip, and in the middle of all this...the answer they have found. "The Happening". "Dark Side of the Flower". You will never hear anything like it again!

GILL TRYTHALL: Country Moog (Pandora/Synthe US) Ex/Ex150:-
Moog -- with a twang! Excellent album by the enigmatic Gil Trythall -- a moog musician who turned his talents towards the sound of 60s Nashville, with some incredible results! The format is simple -- take country hits, strip them down, and fill them with cool electronics and moogy bits -- so that they come out sounding as if they were recorded by Perry & Kingsley after getting drunk at a line dancing party. Tracks are a good mix of originals and covers.
