The Amazing: Wait for A Light to Come (Subkiminal Sounds) CD NEW 100:-
The vinyl is limited to 1,000 copies worldwide. Brand new recordings of Swedish Folk-Rock-Psych-Pop perfection. The Amazing fell far from the tree. A natural process: coming together through affection, then slowly crystallising into a folk-rock-psych-pop- collective slowly pushing, bending then playing with any preconceived notions of pop. Friends first and foremost, it’s this kindred spirit that imbues the band’s debut with a feeling unlike that of most releases – one of natural harmony, persistent progression and with a panoramic gaze fixed on distant settings. Their 2009 debut album has received unanimous critical acclaim worldwide. Some excerpts:
the cream of Sweden's psychedelic/neo-folk underground…an album of rare beauty" MOJO 4/5 'Swedish underground supergroup’s debut suggests the dusty riches of some long-lost LP locked away in psychedelic folk-rock Valhalla.' SPIN "a sublime debut... genuinely an amazing album" UNCUT 4/5 "The Amazing's first is a gorgeously understated blend of gentle psychedelic pop, tranquil folk rock, and gently stoned prog" Q 4/5 "a classic case of strength in diversity, blurring the boundaries between folk-rock dreaminess and psych splendour" WORD. This is their follow up a new mini-album with an all-encompassing sonic soundscape of groovy electric folk rock, psychedelic pop and heavy jams. The core musicians in The Amazing are Christoffer Gunrup, Reine Fiske, who doubles as the lead guitar wizard in Dungen and who’s solos so furiously it’s as if something’s trapped inside him that must be turned into melody or he’ll burst into flames, Johan Holmegard (who doubles as the drummer in Dungen too) and Fredrik Swahn.

The Amazing
: The Amazing (SUBCD30 Subliminal Sounds) CDNEW 130:-
The Amazing fell far from the tree. Empowered but not defined by the successes of previous output; the various members of Dungen, Anna Jarvinen and Sagor & Swing that make up the group are far too depth-full to be called a side project; much to immediate in their pursuit of ingenuous thoughts to be labelled super. The Amazing, instead, is a natural process: coming together through affection, then slowly crystallizing into a folk-rock- psych-pop- collective slowly pushing, bending then playing with any preconceived notions of pop. Already receiving unanimous critical acclaim in Sweden, their debut album is an all-encompassing sonic soundscape of groovy electric folk rock, psychedelic pop and airy acoustic ballads. The core musicians in The Amazing are - Christoffer Gunrup (Swedish singer/songwriter extraordinaire ex Granada), Reine Fiske (lead guitar wizard in Dungen), Johan Holmegard (drummer in Dungen and Life on Earth!), Fredrik Swahn (prominent Swedish multi-musician in Dreamboy, Anna Jarvinen) - with the intimacy permeating through the collection intensifying itself steadily in the music they produce. Take a track like "Deportation Day," or "The Kirwan Song," swimming idly through the groups twisted melody, yet luminously anchored by Reine’s astral guitar – plucked endlessly higher. Elsewhere the likes of "Dragon" and "Romanian" forgo interstellar for a more bucolic revelry, built upon acoustic laments and a vocal ripple that could only have spread itself outwards from Sweden’s forlorn beauty. With special guests including some of Sweden’s finest musicians; Fredrik Bjorling (ex Dungen) and Erik Malmberg (the keyboard champ from Sagor & Swing) amongst others, nothing on ‘The Amazing’ is introverted or overworked – everything is balanced, kept together by natural melodies, soulful vocals and just how perfect should be. ‘The Amazing’ is a feeling, an organic consequence of something that effortlessly came together, the start of a quite extraordinary tale.

BABY GRANDMOTHERS (SUB-TILCD23) NEW 125:-
Baby Grandmothers were a short-lived Swedish band, but one of the most prolific and unique psychedelic, modal, experimental power-trios to emerge out of the Scandinavian psychedelic underground-scene in 1967. Although hailing from Stockholm, Sweden they only released a single in Finland, which has since become one of the most sought after pieces of vinyl from the era. Baby Grandmothers were formed out of the legendary R&B / beat band T-Boones in the summer of 1967. T-Boones are probably best known for their “At the club/King of the Orient” single which is one of the best, and most collectable, out of the Swedish garage beat-era. Guitar-wiz Kenny Håkansson joined the band in 1965and with the group down to a trio they drifted into the psychedelic sounds of the time and in August 1967 released the single “I Want You”, which definitely was the first hard-rock recording ever made in Sweden. The band was then re-christened Baby Grandmothers by the co-founder of the newly opened psychedelic club Filips, for which he needed a house-band. Filips was the legendary breeding ground for bands such as Hansson & Karlsson, Pärson Sound, as well as orgiastic all night jams with foreign luminaries such as Jimi Hendrix and the Mothers of Invention. Baby Grandmothers also supported Jimi Henrix on his Swedish tour in 1968 and then turned into Mecki Mark Men, who became the first Swedish rock band to tour the US. Founding member Kenny Håkansson went on to form the highly influential Kebnekajse, who created the Swedish electric folk psych sound. This unique collection brings live-recordings made at Filips, their impossibly rare single and a rare live recording made in Finland. Painstakingly collected and researched by Dungen’s guitarist Reine Fiske. 16 page booklet.

BLOOD ON SATAN’S CLAW (T UK re) NEW 180:-
As eagerly awaited as The Wicker Man soundtrack which Trunk first released back in 97, this is the first time this beguiling film music from 1971 has ever been released. Directed by PIERS HAGGARD in 1971, this film has slowly gathered a cult following for lots of reason, it's beautifully shot and art directed - it's difficult to find a better representation of 18th century rural Britain. It stars The Devil, evil naked maidens, and of course the music accompanying all the horror is quite extraordinary. Written by MARC WILKINSON, former director of music for the National Theatre, this cult score takes its lead from "The Devil's Interval". Musical appearances from the "ONDES MARTENOT" (the earliest electronic instrument) and "CIMBALOM" add to the overall spookiness of this recording. And in 38 years the music has lost none of its depth or addictive, evil hooks. Sleevenotes also include a superb overview of the score by Michael Tyack from Circulus...

VICTOR BRADY: Brown Rain (Synton re)NEW 130:-
St. Croix Victor Brady carries weird steeldrums to strange New York. Carbonhard rock against Victor's blurring hands create multiple sonic orgasms all over the place. Progressive steeldrum music is pressed forever into midnight vinyl. The sounds open up the sky you see. And Brown Rain falls down soaking the earth with shining metal hallucinodreams. Bizarre cult record from this New York based fuzz trio from 1970 mixing steel drums with heavy psychedelics. Includes the great 11 minute title track, a more psyched out version of Eric Burdon with traces of mid period Blue Cheer.

A great album from start to finish, loaded with organ and fuzz guitar, just oozing on acid and sunshine vibe. They formed in 1966 in Long Beach and named themselves THE TORQUES. When the band signed to the Windi label they chaged their name and recorded their acid masterpiece. It's a highlight of west coast psychedelic sunshine pop influenced by the jazzy psychedelia of Strawberry Alarm Clock, packed with gorgeous harmonies, driving Hammond, minor keyed melodies and electric guitars.

DUNGEN: Skit I allt (Subliminal Sounds SUB-077-CD 2010) NEW 99:-
Pre-order now and we will ship it on the release day end of August, 2010. The CD is a 6-panel digipack with sticker.Sweden's Dungen sweetly return with a collection of gorgeous, dreamlike melodies, psychedelic stonkers and graceful, jazz-filled polyrhythms. called
Skit I Allt.  Says main man/ producer/ arranger/ singer Gustav Ejstes: “For me, it means, Don’t give a shit, forget about it, just go ahead and do it. A friend said: “Skit I Allt; Fuck it, do as you want, time is passing and it’s changing, forget fears and hang-ups, we are small and everything is pretty insignificant on the whole. How will it be? What shall we do?  We often worry so much unnecessarily. Skit i allt, it’s happening now”. In what feels like a very short decade, Sweden’s Dungen has mutated at a furious pace. Main man/ producer/ arranger/ singer/ golden child Gustav Ejstes’s lone constant has been change. At ease with effervescent pop, third-eye popping psychedelia, heavy rock, spider-web folk and breezy jazz, Dungen’s dynamism astounds throughout Skit I Allt . Rather than remain only Ejstes’ studio vision, Dungen is a muscular full band now. Guitarist Reine Fiske, bassist Mattias Gustavsson, and drummer Johan Holmegard are fully integrated into Ejstes’ vision of Dungen: “Whether you perceive Dungen as a band or as me and my songs and my productions, the band is something totally free."  I feel [the presence of the band] more than ever, because even if I am a total control freak they all contribute something unique make the songs come alive.” Dungen debuted in 2001 with an eponymous album of long psilocybic tracks and aural tomfoolery. The next year’s Stadsvandringar found Ejstes coming to grips with the language of rock before the zeitgeist-grabbing third album, Ta Det Lugt ignited the blogosphere so that it glowed like the aurora borealis. Not content to revel in such accolades, Tio Bitar flashed the band’s pop smarts as well as their incandescent freakouts while 4 put the band’s cohesiveness on display, at once gorgeous and biting. This latest album is the one that takes in everything they’ve done, and learned, and brings them to a whole.

DUNGEN: 4 (Subliminal Sounds SW 08 SUBCD27) CD Digipack 125:-
Dungen's fourth studio album extends the acclaimed Swedish outfit's sound past psychedelia into something far more rare. Moving beyond mere stylistic concerns, 4 finds Gustav Ejstes' focus on the extremes of Dungen's sound separating into two entities. Blazing, raw guitar workouts have their own time and place, but now, so do stirringly orchestrated, jazz-cooled compositions with cinematic undertones. Bandleader Gustav Ejstes has made many allusions to his creative process as it likens to that of a hip-hop producer. On 4, that process is more evident than ever, both in the feel of each piece, and in the sense of intuition and control within the members of the group. New drummer Johan Holmegard joins guitarist Reine Fiske and bassist Mattias Gustavsson, while Ejstes steps away from guitar for the entire album, focusing on the piano as his lead instrument. Together, they have honed a classic and seamless sound, constructed with lavish studio flourishes and moving, narrative arrangements, and yet able to toughen up to tear veins of fierce blues-psych instrumentals up from the surface. The ten tracks on 4 comprise Dungen's most concentrated effort to date, beats surging forth and atmosphere changing as their sound continues to evolve. Every song here runs under five minutes, pushing the group to introduce confident melodies and arresting ambiance in tighter frameworks. Gauging from the results, this challenge has done them well. Included in this set are live favorite "Mina Damer och Fasaner," excerpts from a wild psychedelic jam session entitled "Samtidigt", and a storming, Northern Soul-influenced instrumental entitled "Fredag". These stand tall with some of the most fully-realized moments of Dungen's career; percolating prog-pop groover "Det Tar Tid" and eloquent opener "Satt At Se. With a penchant for lush pop portraits, and laced with orange sunshine guitar flash, 4 turns a page in Dungen's sound and story.

DUNGEN: Tio Bitar (SUBCD24) NEW 25:-
Over the past two years, the profile of Swedish psychedelic rockers Dungen has grown at an alarming rate, from a cult studio project into a worldwide musical phenomenon. And on Tio Bitar, we’re hearing the end results of an outpouring of success and support – one which has, for once, inspired the creative processes at hand to make something wholly new and original, yet remaining within the same sphere of emotions that fostered Dungen’s three previous albums. Gustav Ejstes, Dungen’s founder and principal member, made Tio Bitar (translated, “Ten Pieces”) – a bracing display of psychedelic rock, presented with a bright, avid confidence largely by himself, with the assistance of guitarist Reine Fiske. Gustav wrote the songs, and played all of the instruments on his own, with Reine on many lead guitar and bass parts; his style of play puts him well within the top ranks of modern guitar heroes past and present. Says Gustav of Reine’s tone language and instrumental expressiveness, “He has a way of wielding the guitar that not many people have.” An understatement, indeed, and one important piece of the puzzle that allows Gustav to achieve, in his own words, “the best possible result.” “It’s similar to how they often do it in hip-hop,” Gustav states in his description his recording process. “One producer is behind it all, and in this case, I am that producer.” Feel free to draw your own conclusions as to how this all bears out – reasoning crumbles when you hear just what Gustav, Reine, and company have made happen through this process. Dungen is a project that distinctly, effortlessly aligns its soundscapes and influences with an authority that will make you believe these sounds were always meant to go together. Tracks like “Familj,” “Sa Blev Det Bestamt” and “Gor Det Nu” suggest a new, unburdened direction for the belabored concept of “jamming.” Here, t hems in the melodies, borrowing some of their phrasings but spinning off into lucid counterpart, all anchored by the bass, drums, and organ. When vocals – as on past efforts, sung entirely in Swedish – or a flute appear, they’re diverging out to a third melody, still safely within the frame, in tune with each part. Complex arrangements find the songs boiling over with dozens of ideas, stitched together with studio flash, yet played so soulfully that there’s no evidence of the kind of smug, cynical hamminess that’s been hurting rock music since the early ‘70s. Nor is it the other extreme; no wide-eyed innocence and eagerness to please. Tio Bitar follows world tours and enthusiastic responses from the press and public, and answers the praise with yet another set of cohesive, adventurous rock songs that can’t sit still, yet possess the vision and focus to distance itself from distraction and obvious influences. According to Gustav, it all comes down to one thing. “When I was eight years old,” Gustav remembers, “my mother gave me her copy of Are You Experienced? by Jimi Hendrix. That’s where I first discovered and understood what a ‘groove’ was. Since then, whenever I heard that groove, I recognized it, and I liked it.” He’s not looking to emulate the past, though, at least on the past’s unfailingly outdated terms. “Dungen is not retro,” he states. “Dungen is contemporary. Contemporary because it consists of elements from both then and now.”

MERRELL FANKHAUSER: Maui CD (SUBXMCD-3 1997) NEW 40:-
The band MU was formed in 1969 when Merrell Fankhauser teamed up with Jeff Cotton of Captain Beefheart’s band. Both of them had had successful careers in the surf music craze of the mid-60s. When it was discovered that the Hawaiian Islands could have remnants of the sunken Mu civilization, the band decided to move to the island of Maui. But by 1974 all but Merrell Fankhauser had left for the mainland. Merrell was now staying with his girlfriend violinist Mary Lee in the two story Tarzan style jungle house which Merrell had built, complete with flowing lily ponds. The stream cascaded around the house forming a natural pool and waterfall, an ideal setting for Merrell to compose his laid back cosmic music. Around this same time the Tibetan Lama Kar Mapa came to the island for a meditation retreat that was sponsored by one of Merrell and Mary’s neighbours in the jungle. They did a special Black Crow ceremony with 400 devoted hippies all meditating for peace and harmony for all beings on the earth. Merrell and Mary were the first musicians in the United States to play modern music for the Lama. They lived in the Maui rain forest in their jungle retreat for over seven years. Late in 1975 they visited L.A and recorded the Maui Album. The album recording originally started at MCA Studios in Hollywood with producer Dino Airelli who went on to head up Dark Horse Records for George Harrison. Due to Dinos busy schedule he was unable to finish the album. It was later finished in San Francisco and came out on a small independent label Maui Music. It sold a few thousand copies and disappeared. The album is released here in its entirety with 7 bonus tracks including an unreleased version of “Some Of Them Escaped”. This is a true artefact from the Hippy dream of Peace, Love and Harmony for the world! Go to Merrells page!

LUBOS FISER: Valeri and her week of wonders (FK UK re) NEW 130:-
One of the very finest, darkest and most magnificent and delicately haunting; the sacred score to Jaromil Jires' essential Eastern European hallucinogenic-baroque-witch-flick 'Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders'.'Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders' never benefited from a commercial vinyl release and was condemned to a life imprisoned in the vaults of the original film production company sheltered from political duress and controversy for ever more... until now. A duplication of the original master-tapes are now available for one and all to enjoy. Lubos Fiser provides what is perhaps the greatest musical score of all the maligned Czech New Wave feature-films with a gossamer-fragile blend of pastoral-orchestral folk songs and clockwork harpsichords. From the very first delicate chord to the final crescendo this joyous sound is as addictive as the bizarre imagery seen in this seldom celebrated cinematic gem. One of the most outstanding soundtrack reissues since The Wicker Man.

KHAN JAMAL: DRUMDANCE TO THE MOTHERLAND (Eremite US re) NEW 130:-
Its improbable fusion of free jazz expressionism, Black psychedelia, & full on dub like production techniques, Drumdance remains a bracingly powerful outsider statement 34 years after it was recorded live at the Catacombs club in Philadelphia in '72. Comparisons to Sun Ra, King Tubby, Phil Cohran & BYG/Actuel merely hint at the cosmic otherness conjured by the band & by recording engineer Mario Falana's real time 'enhancements'. The 1st edition of 300 copies, issued by Jamal in '73 on the local Philadelphia label Dogtown, was barely distributed outside the city's limits. Since then "Drumdance" has assumed a mythic status among the very few aficionados, eBay mutants, & heads who know of it at all. It can now finally be heard outside the murky inner sanctums!

JAN & LORRAINE: Gypsy People (Fallout UK re) M-/Vg+++ 100:-
Late 60's US ACID-FOLK duo who's sole LP for ABC is a true stunner. Comparable to Michele's 'Saturn Rings', with great melodies, orchestration, vocal harmonies, and a strong hippie-vibe. Wonderful stuff! It features support from musicians including Terry Cox of PENTANGLE!!

ABNER JAY - One Man Band CD (Sub SW) NEW 125:-
Did someone say "Outsider Music..."Real People"...well here's the ultimate release for these kinda´ sounds: The ultimate one-man-band wild man from the 1920-1960s Abner Jay was the most unusual music talent the world has ever seen and a true southerner. His original LPs are now sought after and very rare, making this CD reissue very welcome. There is a long line of social and musical experience which constitutes Jay´s tradition: blacks' domestic entertainment inspiring white imitations; in turn stimulating composed, sheet-music idioms for middle-class and professional performance, which then animated younger generations of black musicians. For forty two years Jay worked as a unique one man band where he played electric banjo and swamp guitar, drums, harmonica, and sang at the same time. Abner Jay was the first of the original black musicians and played the only electric six string banjo you'll ever hear. Jay was a native of Fitzgerald, Georgia and was once a travelling performer with the Silas Green Show, one of the last multifaceted road shows on record. Tastes and tolerances of what constitutes acceptable public entertainment are always changing and Ja ywas part of making idioms which may not in fact have received too much exposure in the daily pressure to captivate audiences by extrovert mannerisms. Singing songs on subjects ranging from LSD to "what's six inches long and has two nuts on the end" you got to hear it to believe it. A true glimpse at some real Americana compiling the best tracks from Abners original LPs. The ultimate in one man bands, outsider artists and swamp blues! NOW ITS BUCK DANCING TIME!

LIFE ON EARTH!: Look!!! There is... CD (SUBCD20 2007) NEW 40:-
Life on Earth! Is the talented multi-instrumentalist Mattias Gustavsson’s, from the Swedish band Dungen, solo project. Together with some fellow traveling kindred musical spirits (musicians from Dungen, The Works, Town & Country and Mia Doi Todd) he has created an amazingly deep and timeless album filled with shimmering vibrant psychedelic folkrock-pop . The basic idea is to make music that celebrates the incredible and absolutely wonderful phenomenon of life on Earth, hoping to spread some joy to any possible listeners. The project has been going on since 2003. Barefoot on tiptoe, in a bubble of magic, swirling elegantly among the stars. Right in between, both after and before, nobody really knows where we came from or where we are going. And if one claims one already knows, one must not forget the eluding future. Suddenly one is cut off from one’s past, intruded on by the present, without a clue of what to say or what to do about anything. But where ever we may go, it is all one and the same anyway. Why not simply enjoy it, until the day we die? So lay all your worry aside now. Don’t hesitate; let your dreams sweep you away. Then you may see everything that’s forgotten here. Lean back and feel how light and exquisite you truly are. Wonder at the beauty of nature; listen to how it invites you among beech trees and squirrels. Embrace it, because he and she and it and we are all connected to you and you are just like everything else, constantly changing into wondrous beings yet unseen. We can’t avoid this, it is the sensation of life. We should know by now, but it doesn’t really matter, what’s real is real, what ever we know. In the end, any little drop of water dripping down into your mouth comes from the surface of this planet, just like any little glimpse of knowledge popping up inside your head is born within your frameworks for believing, and just like any little sound you make or any single letter you draw, it is meaningless without context or connections, but then how to sing or how to write I can’t tell, instead, you might watch the life on Earth for inspiration.

Out of print CD reissue. ”Inside one of the greatest private press psych sleeves ever you'll find pretty enjoyable LA area (they were not from Idaho) highschool pothead sounds with Hammond organ upfront and great echoey drums. Mixes bluesy vibe with a westcoasty outdoors feel in the vocals. Mellow and stoned rather than lysergic, despite uninspired lyrics three out of six tracks are excellent - check out the Gathering vol 3 comp for a sample. The album was sold via gigs and to friends and had no formal distribution. Surprisingly, one track from the LP is used in the highly acclaimed "Lost In Translation" movie. PL – Acid Archives”

MISUNDERSTOOD: The Lost Acetates 1965-1966 (UT US re) NEW 160:-
The Misunderstood may just be the greatest lost band of the 1960s. They had the gifts, the creativity, the chemistry, the ambition, the drive - all the ingredients to make it, plus that extra indefinable 'magic' in their sound, which in its purest moments seemed tuned to a wonderful and strangely magnetic frequency. Torn apart by the Vietnam War draft the band was denied the breakthrough they deserved. Through reissues of tracks like "Children of the Sun" and "I Can Take You to the Sun" their name has become a legend with connoisseurs of sixties garage and psychedelia. However, until now nobody has heard this amazing set of unreleased tracks recorded in Riverside, California and London, England in 1965-66. The only surviving acetates were carefully stored away by drummer Rick Moe after the original band broke up. They were only recently rediscovered. These historic discs contain some of the most exciting music they ever recorded, from raw, pounding garage blues to electrifying psychedelic rock. 14 amazing, newly discovered, unreleased tracks. CD package includes 12 full-color pages with full liner notes by Mike Stax and previously unseen color photos from the band's personal archives.

MYLLA: Vanya (Subliminal Sounds SUBCD19 2007) 25:-
The mythical speakeasy BC was located somewhere in Stockholm’s southern suburbs.
A slushy and cold January night. In a cave, down in the cellar. The rook is filled with heavy, blue smoke and sweaty intoxicated bodies, filled with a longing for life, a longing for a feast. All of them wants to have a break in the weekday, drink a beer and jam. But something ignites, something backfires. The music is released from the introvert jamming and evolves in to a full feathered feast. More friends flow in and the feast and the music grows forth. Endorphins rains down heavily. The feast finally turns into a steaming night train that nobody can stop. Mylla (Mylla means “mould/earth” in Swedish) grew out of that feast, an everlasting feast. 2 years later. A quivering hot Gotlandish summer. A butterfly hatches out of it’s cocoon. The clothes are thin, light or not at all. It’s vacation time and it’s party time and it’s a recording time. The friends gather and more friends turn up. When the summer has melted the ice in the bodies and when beer and pipe both has cooled off and overheated the spirit the party reaches a new phase. Out of the Mylla grows a tree. During a week the summer 2007 the loft in a limestone cottage became a recording studio by day and a dance floor by night. The feast and the creativity had free reign. At this place and in this condition Myllas debut album was created. A beautiful experience, a brutal experience. Mylla grew out of the mythical speakeasy BC, in a context where also both the Works and Dungen figured. After intensive gigging at clubs they recorded their debut album at the Faro island (a secluded island far out in the Baltic Sea known by sailors for centuries as the “White Hawaii”. The island Faro has been closed for all foreigners up until a few years ago as it contains several top secret army bases) in June 2007. It was as much party and dance as recording. This is a feeling that permeates the whole record and it is this feeling that is Mylla. The band consists of a bunch of friends and is a mix of experienced musicians and some that never has stood on a stage before Mylla was formed. Just as you invite friends to a feast so has Mylla also invited several friends to contribute to the to the album, among others Gustav Ejstes from Dungen and the word artist Lasse Fabel. Mylla consists of: Choban, who plays bass guitar. Swahno, who plays electric guitar. Sebbe, who plays acoustic guitar and sing. Roban plays organ and sing. Psychedelic Eric plays flute. Krippa plays drums. Bockarn plays piano and sing.

NINO NARDINI: Jungle Obsession (re) M-/Ex 80:-
Released in 1971, under the blanket of library music anonymity, "Jungle Obsession" is one of those rare and precious records whose extraordinary personality is instantly recognised by the ear of the listener. Timeless. luminous. Its high time one of the greatest instrumental records of the 70s was rediscovered. A demanding effort, unfaltering coherent, bordering somewhere along solar exoticism and primitive psychedelics and entirely focused upon the beauty and mysteries of Kiplings Jungle Book in its hunt for a fascinating artistic El Dorado. Leading this musical expedition, we find two of library musics greats, the amazing Roger Roger (1911-1995) and Nino Nardini (1912-1994). These outstanding conductors, with already substantial careers behind them, also take the role of mad scientists in the legendary Ganaro Studio, the marvellous Jouy-en- Josas-based lab at the heart of which the two magicians have attempted some of the most wonderful musical experiences ever carried out in France. Going beyond dominant current music styles, they blend genres and dare unprecedented mixes with obvious success. "Jungle Obsession" is the undeniable proof, vibrating willingly to an audacious and minimal orchestration that highlights percussion, whilst a forest of luxurious chords wreathes through savage guitars assaults and an electronic sounding backdrop. Intoxicated by these subtle melodies, these feline rhythms and flagrant poetry, all that is left for us to do is to succumb to losing ourselves definitively in the heart of this savage, fantasy land which gives its most wonderful patents to this spicy and bewitching branch we call exotica

NICODEMUS AND MATCHES: Light in the Dark (Parallel World US) M-/M- 100:-
Nicodemus, Detroit's 'web-spinning madman of wisdom and space,' is a sub cultural Renaissance Man. He and his brother Matchez have recorded, singularly and collectively, over 50 albums for Zedikiah Records, the record label Nicodemus started in 1970. He has published 14 book's of poetry, prose and fiction. He has sired three sons by as many wives and presided over the infamous Satan's Last Revenge Motor Club. He studied for 11 years the healing ways of the Mescalero Apache and is known as Whitecrow in Native American circles, proudly displaying the symbol of a healer over his left eye. He is a surrealist painter of some renown who signs his work 'Chongo'. Nicodemus and Matchez's recordings have long been held sacred by a worldwide cult of fanatics of esoteric music. Their sounds are eclectic, ranging from future folk to heavy rock and even acid house... Jello Biafra said about Nicodemus in Incredibly Strange Music: 'My runaway favourite space-folk artist... an instantly recognizable voice that'll send chills down your spine.

LINDA PERHACS: Parallelograms (Wild Places US Re) NEW 130:-
Most of you are probably familiar with this one from the CD reissue from a couple of years back, well throw that CD away! Because finally here's the real deal and here's the lowdown: the amazing original LP of this mesmerizing femme folk psych masterpiece from 1970 is really expensive nowadays and suffers from a bad and crackly pressing. Linda herself was so dissatisfied with the sound on the LP when it originally came out that she only played it once. The first CD reissue was taken from a nice copy but to remove the pops and crackle from the fragile music it went through a horrible Cedar re-mastering which also removed all dynamics making it sound so dull it almost made me cry. Now finally Michael has found the master tapes and we get to hear the recordings in all their original glory! Not only that you also get 6 (!) bonus tracks including a beautiful unreleased song "If You Were My Man" as well as some stunning demo recordings and Linda's spoken instructions and sound demonstrations to the original producer and arranger. Don't miss this must have CD!

PARSON SOUND 2xCD (Subliminal Sounds/Till'indien SW) NEW 195:-
After years of research we‚re re proud to present the nucleus of the Swedish 1960s-70s underground psych rock scene: the legendary Pärson Sound. This 2-CD set presents the most remarkable Swedish underground band, known in a later incarnation and continuation as International Harvester and Träd, Gräs och Stenar (Trees, Grass and Stones), and features both intricate studio recordings and orgiastic live performances. Pärson Sound never released any records in their time and that is why a very few have heard about them at all. The recordings date from 1967/68 while the band explored unknown musical territory as well as inner- and outer space. In 1968 they were invited by Andy Warhol to play at the opening of his exhibition: "Screens, Films, Boxes, Clouds and a Book", at the museum of Modern Art in Stockholm and also opened for the Doors. Influenced by the musical concepts of Terry Riley, Pärson Sound worked at discovering and perfecting their own unique approach towards the mixing of rock and minimalism. They created some of the most remarkable psych- trance- drone- pre-noise music- rock sounds ever recorded. Pärson Sounds music described contexts, interplay and organic growth and shaped a conception of the world - an opposite of fragmentation, individual achievements and intellectual construction. This world was to be perceived as one body, a whole of inviolable parts. The minimalist repetition with slight changes gives associations of a slow growth, of cyclic process, of breathing, pulse, life, movement and machines. The persistent repetition gives the listener an opportunity to discover the sounds, to meditate, to go into the music, join the same journey. Many times one can discover a relationship with music of other cultures. In comparison the music of the Western world can feel cursory, unreliable - as a fear of entering deep into feeling. Pärson Sound's compositions often consist of harsh structures - a rhythm pattern with ostinato bass, a melodic figure - which forms a base for improvisation. Other songs have a more thoroughly elaborated structure that still leaves room for variation. The moment, the audience, the location formed their music. Their key phrase was "We, Here and Now!" With time, the music came to have an increasing "religious" or shamanistic streak - with a raised demand of intensity, presence and warmth - a striving for euphoria and ecstasy. The bands psychedelic approach towards music is so fresh and vital that it transcends time. Listen to it now! A 2xCD with an informative booklet in English and lots of photos.

ST MIKAEL: Visions of the Unknown 2xCD (Gallium Arsenide US re) NEW 180-
Long sold out 2 x CD CD edition of Mikael’s first two rare albums + lots of unreleased bonus cuts. Thick booklet with liner notes and photos.

S.T. Mikael: Mind of Fire (SUBCD22 2007) NEW 25:-
Incredibly enough, but very naturally, after 11-years silence here’s a new album by this mysterious and legendary Swedish psychedelic multi-instrumentalist. S.T. Mikael spearheaded the DIY psychedelic rock/folk movement of the late 1980s-mid-90s, with a collection of mindbending albums. During his long absence S.T Mikael grew more secretive and reclusive, but all the while he was still writing music. Now that he’s finally back here’s at last a chance for to join in to his psychedelic world again. The music, stretching out in many different musical directions, has been done freely and spontaneously in an extremely relaxed and happy environment, where Mikael joined forces with Dungen’s Reine Fiske and Fredrik Björling, who’s musical expertise now also grace the grooves. These otherworldly acid tripper recordings now exists in the real world and ST Mikael, proves, once again, to be a gifted songwriter and an unconventional performer with a very personal ear for acoustics and an emotional honesty seldom seen these days. Folk rocky melodic elements flow with waves of heavy fuzzphase leads, weird detached haunted vocal echoes over the band and the whole thing seems to teeter on the brink of psychedelic oblivion. Not revival either but purely of the now. You do get the feeing that Mikael actually lives the lifestyle rather than just emulating it. His soaring vocals, surreal lyrics, fragile, folky melodies, heavy fuzz riffs, mind bending soul funk and penchant for the spiritual and mystical make this altogether a fascinating voyage that is so mind twisting, soul swirling, upper psychedelic that your third eye takes you on a joyride thru an altered state! This album makes your brain start thinking in those pebble splash pond mind circular expanding waveforms that people on this vibe await the returning ship their roots sent out to bring back the password to tomorrow. This is part one of a suite of two separate albums. The CD also contains 9 previously unreleased vintage recordings and a unique spoken introduction by Mikael. Limited edition of 2,000 copies only.

STARK REALITY: 1969 (NowAgain US 08) NEW 180:-
”One of the most tripped-out albums of funk you'll ever buy -- a rare treasure with a very unusual history! The Stark Reality were a cool little combo formed to work on public television in Boston in the late 60s -- and the combo featured some heavy guitars, fuzzed-up vibes, and some monster percussion laid out in tight bass and drum rhythms that were years ahead of their time!”

THE STOMACHMOUTHS: Born Losers (Subliminal SW re) NEW 40:-
A wild trip with the original Swedish garage punks. The Swedish garage punk rock boom really began back in the 1980s. One of the pioneering bands were the Stomachmouths who road the crest of the 80s garage wave between the years 1984 - 1987 becoming one of the leading Swedish exponent of the genre at the time. They toured Europe several times with their wailing fuzz guitars, screeching Farfisa organ , caveman drums, thumping bass and ultra snotty vocals on full throttle, performing some of the wildest shows ever witnessed. But after three years of endless travels and partying the hectic lifestyle had taken it's toll on the band and they all scattered in different directions. But their musical influence lived on and is now strongly felt in current Swedish bands although none of the Stomachmouths records have ever been reissued on CD before. This CD compilation sets this right presenting all the essential Stomachmouths releases - now with the bands own original 80s mixes. So even if you own their vinyl releases you'll want to groove on how the band actually sounded and was originally intended. Lots of groovy and previously unreleased bonus tracks, 24-page booklet with extensive liner notes giving a first hand inside peak at the 1980s mop top scene + lots of photos etc. The original wyld and untamed garage punk from Sweden.

JADE STONE & LUV: Mosaics; Pieces of Stone CD (Subliminal Sounds 08) NEW 40:-
The sole album from male-female duo Jade Stone & Luv is a lost gem from the heart of the psychedelic 1970s. Composed and self-produced in Nashville, “Mosaics; Pieces Of Stone” went unnoticed by the music industry upon release. Fortunately for us, it didn’t disappear forever, but simply went into retreat, biding its time. While almost unknown outside specialist circles, “Mosaics” has been an underground cult favorite for many years. The combination of top-level songwriting, skillful guitar/keyboard arrangements and soaring vocals is just too impressive to ignore. And beyond these obvious qualities, the album has something subtle and unique, a magnetic power that keeps drawing the listener back. One of Jade Stone & Luv’s earliest advocates was the legendary New York City musicologist Paul Major. Here’s a typical Major impression of the music on “Mosaics”:"Groovy love vibes thru a prism of jade statues in swinging singles apartment complex action... Cadillac with fuzzy dice, feather boa, lotsa cigarette burns, stale perfumed ashen air. This album in the 8-track player at 5 AM with someone you don't even know passed out in the backseat, as you head to the diner to meet up with an early-bird Lava Lite salesman who deals pills on the side. Bubbly champagne molecules become the plastic vinyl booths in dim-lit dive bars; it's crackerbox post-war suburban low-rent psychedelic…" The album’s cinematic qualities were also highlighted in a review in the recent Acid Archives book, which deals with vintage underground music:“…The music is notoriously hard to describe, but projects scenes of all-night cruising through Edge City... a hip which is not metropolitan hip, but dreams of stardom and glamour from the American underbelly, two renegade souls zooming down the highway between Austin and Nashville...”After 30 years, this rare experience is finally available for general consumption. Done in collaboration with Jade Stone himself. Contains 10 bonus cuts and booklet with liner notes and photos.

IGGY & THE STOOGES: Raw Power (Columbia US re) M-/Ex 60:-

TRAD GRAS och STENAR: Homeless Cats
(Gashud/Subliminal Sounds) CD 130:-
Just in time for Trad Gras och Stenar (Trees Grass and Stones) 40-year anniversary the Swedish psychedelic trance-rock pioneers releases a new album - Homeless Cats. The first one in seven years and the seventh since the singing start in 1969. Eleven new boundless tracks with organic music for open minds. A 40-year anniversary is actually rather on the small. Back in 1967 the guitarist BoAnders Persson had already started his Terry Riley-inspired underground band Parson Sound with the bass player Torbjorn Abelli and drummer Thomas Mera Gartz, amongst others. They evolved intoInternational Harvester, then Harvester, and finally striking root as Trad Gras och Stenar in 1969. The following year they arranged, end performed at, the legendary Swedish Gardes-festivals that pioneered the Swedish alternative music movement. Trad Gras och Stenar creates their own contemporary music, even if they have been compared to Krautrockers like Can and Faust internationally. Rhythmic heart pumping and sound streaming, sure – but at the same time peculiarly Swedish, with their roots in the mould and with branches that reaches high up in to the clear air. The new album, “Homeless Cats”, has also been able to develop in its own tempo. It was recorded by the band themselves during the period 2002-2007, mostly under jam-like forms in the bands rehearsal house and studio in Viksund -  Sweden, but also live at gigs. During this period they also toured Europe, USA, Russia and Japan. In the meaty album booklet they give us a couple of personal travelogues. Trad Gras och Stenar have evolved a clear and mature sound with space enough for both suggestive heaviness and mind-expanded searching. The eleven new tracks bubbles and seethe. The band members build soundscapes all together where the music is allowed to grow forth freely. Sometimes the mostly instrumental tracks are irresistibly captivating as well as evolving seemingly weightlessand and sometimes it becomes like a plow in turbo tractor pace wrenches deep furrows in the stone field. Homeless Cats makes it’s mark. Heavy, at the same time vertiginous. Timeless. Trad Gras och Stenar has lost non of their spark… on the contrary and that  is why the band is still touring worldwide. This new album is amazing; for the first time their whole mind-blowing live experience have been translated in to an album…much like the Deads “Anthem of the Sun”. I mean these guys are soon pushing 70 and are still playing the US cost to cost in a small van, touring Japan sleeping in temples on mountain tops. They are still living on the edge and playing like it really means something to them. In fact they are playing as their lives depended on it…and it really does.

TRAD GRAS & STENAR: Gardet 12.6.1970 (Subliminal Til Re) 115:-
The first in our new series called "Swedish Underground Archives". The series will focus on classic yet mostly unreleased recordings by known and unknown to mythical Swedish Progressive -Psychedelic groups from the 1960s-1970s.First out is the best ever recordings from the legendary Trad Gras & stenar (Trees Grass & Stones) recorded at the first ever Swedish out doors summer hippie festival in Sweden 1970. The sound is just amazing: a stoned lysergic wall of acid guitars jamming away and never letting up, pounding bass , furious drums and mystical howling vocals . A true landmark in psychedelic/progressive history .

THE VALERIE PROJECT (TN UK) NEW 100:-
The sound goes off and the amps get cranked (do harps need amps?) as a collective of Philadelphia's finest underground musicians, spearheaded by Greg Weeks (Espers), pay tribute to Jaromil Jires' seminal Eastern European hallucinogenic-baroque-witch-flick Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders. The first chapter of The Project Series, Greg has enlisted the help of members from Espers, Grass, Fern Knight, Fursaxa, Woodwose, Timesbold and Rake to realise his vision of performing a unique acid-charged live soundtrack to this Finders Keepers favourite. Honed through a handful of intimate live dates across the US over the past year, including 2 sold out dates at the Anthology Film Archives in New York in conjunction with B-Music and a triumphant appearance on the final night of this year’s Meltdown festival supporting Jarvis Cocker at the Royal Festival Hall, The Valerie Project breathes fresh life into one of the most visually arresting and important works of fantasy film ever created.

ALAN WATTS: This Is It (Locust US re) M-/M- 80:-
Another psychedelic holy grail reissued. Originally released in 1962 and regarded as one of the earliest psychedelic albums. It is a plundering, blistering, free form freak-out of totally unconscious group sonic exploration. Legendary Zen guru Watts leads the musicians and non-musicians through communal chant, primitive choogle and raw American tribalism. Here's where the so called "weird America" begins.

ROGER WOOTON & LISA O PIU: Cut the Air at Mello Club (Mello SW) NEW  150:-
Roger Wootton from the band COMUS together with the Swedish band Lisa o Piu. This LP includes a fantastic concert from 4th & 5th of December 2008. Songs from both First Utterance and To Keep from Crying in absolute phenomenal versions. The LP also includes 2 songs from Piu and a never before performed COMUS song! The printed inner bag has a detailed story and pictures. BLACK VINYL version 700 copies only!

WORD OF LIFE: Dust (Xotic Mind SW 95) NEW 95:-
Yes, its finally time for the follow up to their very well received debut LP Furthur Ahead. This one is even more baked: surging fuzz/wah lead guitars, spacy moog attacks, flutes, percussion the way we want it. Well this one doesn't need any hype. Everyone is going to be satisfied! The CD includes several bonus tracks which sort of makes in totally different from the LP + poster sleeve.

THE WORKS (Subliminal Sounds SW) NEW 25:-
We're very happy to presents a new and fantastic, and truly psychedelic, Swedish band: The Works. (The Works are also closely linked with Dungen, their lead singer and guitarist Andreas handled the bass playing for Dungen on their latest NYC trip, and several Dungen members guest the Works debut album). It is rare to come across a band that can straddle that vast canyon between serial debauch and fierce, exacting professionalism. The Works from Stockholm, Sweden, however are just such a band and they come over like young goggle-eyed virtuosos from some weird Scandinavian conservatoire where ergot, as well as hours of practice, is on the curriculum. How apt then that lead singer/guitarist Andreas began The Works with rhythm guitarist Martin while both were attending the Stockholm School of Music. Six years later (and after a couple of line-up changes) they've consolidated a quintet, all of whom are individually singer/songwriters who play many instruments, hence the depth and intricacy of their sound. Even drummer Johan, who possesses the clattering bombast of a Keith Moon, dedicated 2 whole years of his young life to studying drumming in Cuba. Musically they're saturated in many influences and yet there's something much bigger in there, something unnamable, some element that's hard-wired into their psychically-linked nervous systems. The Works are transcending their influences, becoming more themselves and no one else. Take the Nordic acid test and jack up on The Works.

TOM ZACHARIAS: Belinda (Subliminal Soundsd SW re) NEW 125:-
We've just unleashed the ultimate Swedish early 70s underground psych funk erotica groove record! Yes you've heard about the Swedish sin but here's the ultimate proof. Not only were the hippies practicing free-love but they recorded some dirty music too. In the early 70s legendary outsider artist genius/madman Tom Zacharias, together with the cream of Swedish studio musicians, some beautiful Swedish hippie nymphs and a bunch of drugged out freaks, recorded two ultra rare LPs called "Belinda" and "the Daughters of Belinda". Both of these which are now mega rare collectors items that never turn up, even in Sweden. These two masterpieces, with their XXX-rated lyrics, were recorded with both Swedish and English lyrics but only the Swedish language versions were ever released. Even though adds were put out in both Screw magazine and Mayfair the English language versions were kept in the can. Until now! We present both versions on one CD complete with extended liner notes telling the previously untold story of how this came to be. Great groovy, funky acid erotica with loads of gurgling fuzz/wha-wha guitars, booming bass, wicked drum beats and over the top XXX erotic lyrics!! The crudest perversities, horrible chock sensations, .presented in the most frugally and tasteless manner ever conceived. Don’t miss this opportunity to embarrass yourself in front of your family, your partner or your friends, a once in a lifetime opportunity. Order your copy today and we guarantee you the dirtiest and most disgusting you have ever experienced in your loudspeakers. Do it while you can!

An unbelievable collection of dynamic Cambodian music recorded between the 1960s and the 1990s, both in Cambodia and in the United States. A truly Khmer blend of folk and pop stylings - Cha-Cha Psychedelia, Phase-shifting Rock, sultry circle dance standards, pulsing Cambodian new wave, haunted ballads, musical comedy sketches, Easy-Listening numbers and raw instrumental grooves presented in an eclectic variety of production techniques. Male and female vocalists share the spotlight, embellished by roller rink organ solos, raunchy guitar leads and MIDI defying synthesizers. Culled from over 150 ageing cassettes found at the Asian Branch of the Oakland Public Library in California, these recordings showcase a pre and post holocaust Cambodian musical lineage that can't be ignored.

V/A: Choubi Choubi! Folk and Pop Sounds from Iraq (SF US re) M-/Ex 130:-
Meticulously selected from Iraqi cassettes and LPs found in Syria, Europe and the Iraqi neighborhoods of Detroit, Michigan, this unique collection of folk and pop styles displays a wealth of outstanding music that is exclusive to Iraq and has rarely been showcased abroad. There are many reasons why Iraqi music stands alone in the dynamic world of Arabic music: one example is the unbelievable rapid fire machine-gun rhythms fluttering atop the main tempo. This is the work of a unique nomadic hand drum called the Khishba –also known as the Zanbour (Arabic for wasp). A style prominently featured here is the infamous Iraqi CHOUBI -a driving rhythmic style that can include fiddles, double reeded instruments, percussion, bass, keyboards and oud over its signature beat. Other styles featured are the BASTA (an urban Baghdadi style), the BEZIKH, and the pulsating HECHA. Also heard is the MAWAL- a vocal improv that sets the tone of a song, regardless of the style. Additionally there are three cuts from Ja’afar Hassan’s 1970s record, "Let’s Sing Together". Being a folk-rock record, it’s a true anomaly for Iraq. Hassan was a mouthpiece for the Iraqi Socialist movement just a few years before Saddam Hussein. But most of the music in this collection was produced during the Saddam period– between the 1980s and 2002. Since the 2003 invasion and the wholesale disassembly of the country, classic tracks like these may already be part of a disappeared past.

V/A: Eccentric Soul: The Big Mack Label (Numero US re) NEW 130:-
This edition volume of the Eccentric Soul series examines the oil stained underside of the Motor City sound. There are no gold records, million dollar buyouts, or quaint museums at the end of the story, just a handful of four figure 45s, a box of photographs, and a condemned building. If Detroit was once an ocean of soul, the Big Mack label was certainly an island. Big Mack lasted an incredible twenty years without so much as a sniff of a hit. Dogged by lack of airplay, distribution, and a general lack of understanding of the music business, the label failed on almost every level except where it counted; the music. From soulful doowop to blistering garage funk, a left at sultry R&B and then a quick dodge into budget Hendrix wailing over a steel drum break, this disc is the epitome of Eccentric Soul. Artists include Bob & Fred, the Manhattens, Edd Henry, Ms Tyree Jones, the Essence, the Performers, Mae Young, the Soul President, the Sleepwalkers, the Grand Prix's, and L. Hollis & the Mackadoos."

V/A: Eccentric Soul: The Deep CityLabel (Numero US re) NEW 130:-
" This edition of the Eccentric Soul series traces the roots of disco back to 1964 via a troop of marching misfits. The Deep City label launched the career of Betty Wright, Little Beaver, Paul Kelly, Clarence Reid (and subsequently Blowfly), and Grammy winning producer Willie Clarke, before going under in 1968. A cross between Detroit rhythms and Memphis brass, the Deep City sound, and its players, helped create the disco explosion of the early 1970s. Culled from the collection of Florida music historian Jeff Lemlich, the tracks selected showcase the talents of relative unknowns like the Moovers, Them Two, Johnny K Killens, Frank Williams, and Helene Smith, and also features the earliest work ever recorded by Paul Kelly and Betty Wright."

V/A: Eccentric Soul: Mighty Mike Lenaburg (Numero US re) NEW 130:-
" This edition of the Eccentric Soul series train finds us digging through the photo albums and tape libraries of Phoenix, Arizona's second family of soul. Dyke & the Blazers were great, sure, but when we heard a cover of 'Funky Broadway' being destroyed by a wedding band, we knew that there had to be more to the legacy of Arizona soul than an awkward teenager doing the centipede. Enter producer/songwriter Mike Lenaburg and his ramshackle 'stable' of performers; Michael Liggins, Ronnie Whitehead, Sheila Jack, We The People, Small Paul, Lon Rogers, the Soul Blenders, the Soulsations, and, arrests pending, the Newlyweds. Released on a half dozen local and national labels throughout the '60s and '70s, Lenaburg's recordings represent that wrong side of the desert sound. A melange of Tejano psychedelia, flutey funk, horny soul, and fist fight doo-wop, 'Eccentric' just might be an understatement."

V/A: ETHNIC MINORITY MUSIC OF NORTHEAST CAMBODIA (sf us RE) NEW 130:-
For the first time, here is a recording that documents the ceremonial animist music from the mysterious tribal villages of Northeast Cambodia. The Tampoans, Krungs, kavets, Braos, and Jaraîs of Ratanakiri Province and the Phnongs in Mondolkiri Province have been living amidst each other in this region for centuries preserving and expanding their unique cultural heritage, sometimes at peace and other times in conflict with one another or with foreign invaders. The music includes hypnotic gong ensembles, guitar ballads, bamboo flute, and unique local instrumentation such as the “Gungteng” and the “Mum”. The superb singing styles and vocals present throughout are absolutely mesmerizing. These tracks sound like nothing you’ve heard before, all magnificently documented transporting the listener into the heart of each performance. Recorded on location by Laurent Jeanneau over a 2-year period from 2003-2005 with his revealing liner notes and a detailed tracklist included within.

V/A: THE IKON RECORD STORY 2xCD (Frantic re) Ex/Ex 120:-
Lavish double disc set, focused on one of the most obscure yet enigmatic independent labels of the mid-1960s: Sacramento's Ikon Records. Ikon Enterprises was a studio and production set-up based in California's capital that existed for just a brief few years between 1963 and 1966, yet was ground zero for every teenaged aggregation that could convince their parents to fork over the cash needed with which to enshrine their progeny's adolescent warblings on a shiny vinyl 45s. These cool, cryptic items, issued on the studio's custom label, are impossibly rare discs that feature pure, unadulterated teenaged mid-1960s rock'n'roll in its varying forms, whether they be surf, R&B, instrumental, folk-rock, raw garage, Brit-Inv, or spy-themed novelty. The Ikon Records Story has been in the works for many years, but the recent serendipitous discovery of all the labels cutting masters for Ikon releases now enables the Frantic team to deliver up an unprecedented 60 tracks of primo material, virtually all reissued for the first time, and thus unlike most archival collections, the sound quality is second to none. Additionally, various band members have opened their files to provide unreleased material, as well as fill in the story behind this mysterious imprint.

V/A: LATIN AMERI CARPET (SS US re)  NEW 140:-
"Exploring the Vinyl Warp of Latin American Psychedelia, Vol. 1". Historically Latin America was the part of the "new world" that Christopher Columbus "discovered" in 1492, which soon was brutally conquered by the Spanish and Portuguese. Obviously it was only a "discovery" from a Eurocentric perspective because, in fact, on these vast lands there were hundreds of advanced native cultures living for centuries. However after countless years of violent colonization and internal wars, the independence emerged on the whole continent launching a group of new countries with their own and unique identities. But what is Latin America nowadays? A complex answer for a complex puzzle: some people would say its a huge cocktail that combines -in a more or less chaotic way- the rests (or ruins) of Pre-Columbus Cultures and diverse European traditions mixed with a high dose of pseudo-tropical weathers, Latin manners and unstable economies... although thats also a simplification: Latin America is just Latin America and it deserves to be "rediscovered"... But lets go straight to the record. Latinamericarpet is a non-stop collage of vinyl artifacts culled from stacks of forgotten LPs of the 1960s and 1970s from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Chile, and Isle de Pascua (Easter Island). This compilation brings together some glittering sounds from LPs that have been somehow forgotten over the years. Although most of the tracks presented here were recorded during the peak of the psychedelic era in the late 60s and early 70s, this is not a collection packed with guitar group psychedelia although there are a few unknown gems here that qualify as such. There are also pop and folkloric songs, childrens songs, odd instructional record excerpts, and a few other anomalies from our neighbours to the south. For sure these selections are only brief samples of what was done in Latin America in those glorious years, but while we wait for further works that can bring to light more sounds from this "undiscovered" continent, just relax, turn on your stereo and keep this magic Latinamericarpet flying. (Compilation/Liner notes by Albano Costillares in Argentina)

V/A: Molam: Thai Country Groove from Isan (SF US re) M-/Ex 80:-
The classic recordings featured here are selections from rare vinyl LPs, 45s & cassettes recorded in Isan & beyond between the 70s & 80s. Molam literally translates into 'master singer', but it remains more of an umbrella term covering over a dozen types of lam styles in which male & female singers can be backed by a free-reed bamboo mouth organ called a khaen, indigenous lute-like instruments.

V/A: MOLAM: THAI COUNTRY GROOVE FROM ISAN vol 2 (SS US re) NEW 130:-
In the late-1960s, at the onset of Molam's modern genesis, electric guitars and organs were introduced alongside the extant folk sounds of the khaen (bamboo mouth-organ) and Phin (Thai lute). Hybrid styles were formed with an electrified sound that jived with tradition while creating something entirely new. Much of the music relies on stock formulas, designed primarily to showcase the stylings of various singers from the region. But, as this brilliant collection demonstrates, the rules tend to bend a bit as more adventurous groups experiment with the genre and the production. Sound effects, flamboyant vamping, odd vocal styles or trick intros and finales based on popular rock themes show up now and then, among other playful and dynamical shifts, making for some exceptional listening. Enjoy this rarely heard music, culled from vintage cassette and vinyl recordings, rescued from the silent places in which they've rested for the past decades.

Great vocal and instro surf nuggets from the 60s.

V/A: PISCES: A LOVELY SIGHT (Num US re) NEW 180:-
1969's A Lovely Sight, Pisces' only attempt at an LP, never made wax; but the fuzz guitar phrases and tambourine shuffle of "Dear One" instantly illustrate the band's woozy realm. Deeper inside, bass scales borrowed from Sgt. Pepper give way to Who moves wrecked by bad fidelity and harsh intrusions of found sounds. Jefferson Airplane's swirled, lysergic Haight Street utopia melds with the urban narcosis of the Velvet Underground's East Village.  But Pisces hailed from another ghost town altogether: Rockford, Illinois, where rusted, endless plains bear close resemblance to a bummer acid trip or a junkie's rock bottom. In 1969, the industrial Midwest was hurting for the hard stuff, but what it got was plenty of the White Album - enough to have Jim Krein, Paul DiVenti, and Linda Bruner recording through a glass onion all their own. The unsettling balance of their unissued LP combines homespun psychedelic vision and secondhand studio trickery psychedelic vision and secondhand studio trickery with naive readings of the rock sound of the day, resulting in a diverse, haunted rock headspace few coastal bands ever flew through, let alone over.

V/A: Radio Sumatra: The Indonesian FM Experience (sf) NEW 140:-
The music and production encountered here represents a cross-section of Sumatran FM radio and to a greater extent, what's happening now in Indonesian culture. From the signature sounds of Sumatra (Melayu, Minang Pop, the Batak ballad) to the widespread Indonesian phenomenon of Dangdut, this exclusive "FM only" Radio Collage will leave your skull shattered, wondering why it's taken so long to be turned-on to the modern pulse of the world's fourth largest country. Some of these selections come from Java and other parts of Indonesia via the FM airwaves of Sumatra's major cities. Islamic Folk, Gambus Rock, and gorgeous anomalies are also placed in the mix amidst brief news reports, advertisements, prayers, and karaoke call-in shows. Many of the station ID's could be mistaken for American or European networks and much of the music is highly influenced by western pop/rock/punk/metal/rap/etc. But beyond these obvious comparisons is an explosive musical kaleidoscope; still fresh, somewhat sincere and naive, and a bit resistant to the grasp of the world's cultural export Moguls. This is an essential listening experience. There is undeniable evidence here of how Indonesians have crafted some of the world's most thrilling popular music….yet the rest of this world somehow refuses to recognize it….that is, until now!

V/A: Soft Sounds for Gentle People Presents: He & She (Pet US re) NEW 140:-
Fantastic comp with 22 far-out pop psych duos from the late 60s "It pretty much began with Sonny and Cher. When the teener template of Paul and Paula and Dick and Deedee got superimposed on the hip set, a new genre was born. The success of co-ed pairings like Mimi and Richard and Nino and April had coffee house folkies shacking up in droves and soon every town had its own dynamic duo. There were variations too. Paul and Mary found their Peter. John Phillips had two chicks so he had to find another Papa. But the sound was what made it, the call and response, the traded verses love stories acted out over twelve-strings ringin, like shaggy-topped Romeos and Juliets in tight slacks and pilgrim belts. You’ve heard some of the reissues the Blackburns and Snows, the Jims and Jeans, their stories and music made public again after years in obscurity. Now hear the ones who didn’t quite crack the radio charts, at least not for long. The ones whose songs remain unsung. Heroes and heroines in the nightclubs and studio booths. Reaching out in the darkness, and the sunshine too. In love and touching forever. She and He. He and She."
