R.D. BURMAN: Shalimar (re) M/M- 200:-
Long deleted exact reissue including the deluxe 3-panel fold out sleeve. Legendary Indian funk-Sitar Moog soundtrack in the original Indian edition. The film is about a Mafia boss who wants to select his predecessor. He does so by giving 5 master thieves the task of steeling a huge ruby called "SHALIMAR" from his own castle. The music is unsurpassed: Title Music - unique Indian instrumental funk track with wah wah and eerie melodies over break beats (sort of Star Trek meets Dirty Harry in Bombay), in extreme stereo, and the floor filler "Let’s do Cha Cha Cha" with moog and sitar ridden passages and sexy singing. But there’s more! Check the ersatz tribal dance music on the end of side one, the sleazy funk song "Baby let’s dance together" and another instrumental tune which is more Deep Bombay Drama. Music by the Indian genius Rahul Dev Burman.
JIMMY CATALANO: Jimmy Does It All Alone (Private US) rw Vg+++/G- to EX
New Jersey one-man-band lounge act vanity pressing. “This guy used to do an organ single at "The Pub" in the Allwood section of Clifton, NJ. The trumpet was the last thing he added. He used a Hammond as his main axe with a then-new Mini Moog on top, a grand piano on his right, and either an Allen Trio or some sort of Conn on his left. The last I'd heard of him he was at the 7 Sisters in Perth Amboy.” All of side A is pretty much trashed by a severe scratch except the last track which miracously survived unharmed…and that is the track worth getting the album for (and the cool sleeve of course); a great version of “Evil Ways”.

BILL CLOONEY: The Wheels of Time (Phonography US 75) ss re toc wobc VG+/M- 300:-
Fantastic real people lounge psych vanity masterpiece here. And totally unknown too it seems. I’ve been looking for a spare for ages since scored Paul Ms original copy. ten years later here it is. So where to begin? Well, you firstly flip for the awesomely ridiculous front sleeve pic with Bill decked out in the worst imaginable Elvis impersonator style gear complete with leopard vest and chains…and a pose that will have you in stitches. The backside pics reveals a more deep loner kind of one man band with Bill playing various instruments and hanging out by his trailer. Onwards to the sounds; among his self penned songs the following two are my favourites: “Use Me”; an utterly berserk masochist song underscored by some great fuzz guitar and the loner garage psych lounge of “My Baby’s Gone”. And then we have the utterly bonkers version of “Sunny”. This must rank as the ultimate lounge band version of this staple song. Complete with a long instrumental Hammond organ and fuzz guitar duel. Phew! This album surely is a mind blower and my copy will sit forever in my vanity pressing collection.
TROY CORY: Todays Puzzle Vol II (Cinema Prize US)tofc rw ss Vg+/Vg+++ 120:-
Some kind of TV personality? Makes a strange and haunting late 60s lounge LP. The sleeve with him and several beautiful ladies makes no sense and the title vol 2 is also weird as no one has ever heard of a vol 1. A twilight zone lounge mystery.

JAN DAVIS & THE FLAMENCO BOOGIE BAND: Flamenco U.S.A (CamBria US) Ex/M- 200:- Pretty much unknown early 70s oddity with some massive rare grooves that will make DJ happy.
NATHAN DAVIS: 1965-1976 (Jzman UK re) M-/M-/M- 190:-
Nathan Davis has been an internationally significant figure in jazz throughout the latter half of the 20th century, but to many his musical legacy remains little known. This album presents the music of Nathan Davis as it developed through the '60s and '70s, from bop through modal to world sounds and funk. Having turned his back on the US he spent the '60s living in Europe, playing and recording with jazz luminaries such as Kenny Clarke, Art Blakey and Eric Dolphy, before returning at the end of the decade to take up a career in teaching in Pittsburgh. This collection includes recordings from his most significant albums as recorded in France, Germany, Yugoslavia, Turkey and the US. This selection displays a variety of musical styles, with performances by Davis on tenor & soprano saxophone and flute.

FERRANTE & TEICHER: Soundproof (Westminister US 5?) ss srw Vg+++/Vg++ 300:-
Amazing 50s album from the team of Ferrante & Teicher -- easily some of their greatest and wildest work on record! One this album the duo is playing the piano like nobody else -- save perhaps for John Cage! The duo do a heck of a lot of work inside the piano -- plucking the strings, hitting them like vibes, and sticking in all of these weird bits to create a "prepared piano" sound that far surpasses the ideas that even Cage came up with! And through all of this, they always manage a hi-fi swing -- working the piano to come up with amazing tracks that sound more electronic than acoustic, a perfect fit for the space-age cover of the album!

MEL HENKE: La Dolce Henke (Warner Bros. US) Ex/Ex 400:-
A classic beatnik curio from 1962. Mel Henke got his start as an advertising copywriter, and he uses his skill in that area to create a not so subtle, sexually provocative lounge record that will leave you on the floor laughing. The lush, elaborate arrangements (often driven by Henke's own great piano playing) are stupendous. But the stars here are the songs, skits really, which are just this side of being obscene. This is Jet Age, swingin' bachelor pad (and Cad) music to its ultimate limits. "The musical equivalent of 'Playboy' magazine!"
HOLLYWOOD POP ORCHESTRA: Motion In Percussion and Orchestra (Sonic Workshop US) ss stoc swoc Vg++/Vg+++ 400:- Great and impressive 1950s “spage age bachelor pad music”. Exciting audio-visual experimentation with sound moving back and forth between the speakers. No one could afford doing a cover like this today for sure.

BHARAT KARKI & PARTY: INTERNATIONAL MUSIC (EM re) NEW 210:-
From beginning to end, this is a flood of weird Indian psychedelic funk, showering us with heavy percussion grooves in a borrowed 'international music' style featuring elements of rock, as well as latin and arabic music, melded with chanted Hindu mantra. Electric guitar and bass, bunch of Indian percussion, flutes, scream, organ and (maybe) Moog! An explosion of Indian youth music from the mysterious- 1978 private production. First time ever reissue.

GERSHON KINGLSEY: First Moog Quartet (Audio Fidelity US 70) Ex/Ex 400:-
In 1970, Kingsley formed the pioneering First Moog Quartet, a four-synthesizer ensemble that attempted to prove that the electronic music could be played 'live' on stage, even in classical musical venues like Carnegie Hall (where the group gave the first live performance of synthesized music ever on January 30, 1970). Kingsley said, 'People were kind of confused about the concert, I understand, because it was just so new.' In order to get the Moog Quartet going, Kingsley had to convince Robert Moog to build the three other synthesizers he needed. Then hire & train four musicians to play them. Not an easy task. But Kingsley's First Moog Quartet is the astonishing result.
PETE LA ROCA: Basra (Blue Note US re) NEW 180:-
Exact reissue of one of the Blue Note magical "All Star"recordings. These gentlemen are painting with a huge tonal canvas with broad, bold strokes. From the beginning bars of the recording to the end, this modal jazz magical journey will knock your socks off.
PETE LA ROCA: Turkish Women at the Bath (Douglas Us re) NEW 180:-
Although best known for his "Basra", La Roca recorded two albums for Douglas Recordings in 1967, the previously released "Bliss!" and this obscure date. Now rare LP by this incredibly strange lounge jazz bossa duo who has been entertaining at the suave 1940s lounge the Dresden Room in Hollywood for the last 18 years. Decked out in gold lamé or flashy sequins, this duet's pulse-pounding energetic act bounces and lingers in the Dresden's dark retro décor. They were featured with an unforgettable performance in the movie "Swingers". They certainly have an strange lounge twilight zone "outsider" sound although they count as their fans everyone from Frank Sinatra to Sean Penn. Front sleeve is autographed by both Marty and Elayne.

ATTILIO MINEO: Man in Space with Sounds (SUB-081-LP) NEW 220:-
Limited edition of 500 copies only. Recorded in 1951 but only released in conjunction with the 1962 Seattle World's Fair as the musical accompaniment to the Bubbelator, a transparent, spherical elevator that carried as many as 150 passengers, Attilio Mineo's Man in Space with Sounds remains one of the most foreboding and complex records in the cosmic exotica canon. A dark, dissonant exploration of interstellar travel rooted in the avant-garde ethos of Cage and Stockhausen, this is music that's alien not only in its presentation but also in its orientation, fusing traditional instrumentation and sound effects to the point that one becomes indistinguishable from the other. Electronic elements pulse, hum, and sputter their way to complete domination of Mineo's sonic palette, depicting a bleak, sterile future where mankind gives way to machinery. Man In Space With Sounds is one of those legendary LPs. A rare souvenir of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, this music served as the soundtrack to a ride called the Bubbleator, which transported fair visitors through an overview of the future, a technological utopia where science and space travel promised solutions to all of humanity’s plights. Needless to say, that future never arrived and this music (actually recorded in the early 1950s) still sounds as futuristic today as it must have back then. The all-original compositions fall somewhere between nervous Philip Glass and 1950s sci-fi movie music, arranged with string orchestra in a sometimes rhythmic, polyrhythmic, or merely ambient cloud of odd electronic space noises. Despite its intended technological optimism, the music is quite heavy and menacing, and the future ultimately feels pretty scary. Regardless, this recording proves Attilio Mineo to have been an unbelievably progressive and underappreciated composer and arranger. The amazing aural and visual content of this endearing package transcend everything. A rare, sought-after gem made accessible as a facsimile, with added bonus photos, in a limited pressing of 500 copies. Packaged for collectors by collectors.

MOONDOG: The Viking of Sixth Avenue 2xLP (HJ UK re) M/M 210:-
Great overview of MOONDOG's amazing artistic life - including recordings spanning from 1949 till 1995, with numerous 78s and various other vanished records revived for the first time (not to mention a couple of Weegee photographs!). Though the compilation is rooted in the decades Moondog regularly lived rough in New York City, performing on street corners, at the same time it lays the music's claim to the future. It makes vivid sense of his inspiration of fans from Igor Stravinsky to Bob Dylan, Mr Scruff to Frank Zappa, Charlie Parker to Janis Joplin to Antony & The Johnsons. As Moondog put it himself in 1989 - 'I still love horned helmets and swords and spears. I like to feel that I'm loyal to my past. I wouldn't want to be on the street anymore. But, you know, that led to a lot of things.'

HARRY PARTCH: Petals (Composer Recordings US)rw Vg++/Vg+++ 300:-
Classic and essential late 1960s avant garde lp containing what is probably Partch's greatest all-instrumental composition. The work is performed by Partch and his Gate 5 Ensemble on his unique micro tuned instruments/sound sculptures, which are variously grouped into small ensembles (mostly duets and trios) for each of the piece's 34 sections. This allows for a stunning showcase of each of the instruments' distinct sounds, perhaps more so than on any other Partch recording. Virtually the entire Partch orchestra is highlighted, including the Zymo-Xyl, Crychord, Surrogate Kithara, Chromelodeon II, Koto, Mazda Marimba, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, Diamond Marimba, Kithara I+II, Bloboy, Spoils of War, Harmonic Cannon I, Marimba Eroica, Castor and Pollux, Adapted Guitar II, Drone Devils, Gubagubi, Blue Rainbow, Gourd Tree, and Cone Gongs, and several of these were recorded for the first time on this highly recommended lp. From the late 1930s onward, after living as a transient hobo, Partch developed instruments based on his own revolutionary tuning theories (considered the first in the field since Pythagoras). He composed in isolation within the musical universe he created. And dare I say it the Petals sounds like one of the weirdest Exotica albums.
PIERO PICCIONI: La Decima Vittima/The 10th Victiom OMPST 2 x LP (Easy Tempo I re) Ex/M- 100:-

Directed by Elio Petri and starring Marcello Mastroianni and Ursula Andress (mmmmm....), La Decima Vittima is a futuristic tale where people hunt one another for sport - trying to score a kill in front of the movie crews they arranged so they can make TV adverts and cash-in on their fame...”

One of the greatest Tito Puente albums from the 50s, and a spare percussion jam session that's right up there with his legendary Puente In Percussion album! The group features Mongo Santamaria, Bill Correa, Julito Collazo, and Enrigue Marti on percussion with Tito -- and the only other additional sounds are some occasional vocals, and a pounding bassline. The set's extremely raw, with a very tight groove -- and the sound is incredible -- easily enough to make this one of Tito's best percussion dates ever!

T.K. RAMAMOORTHY: Fabulous Notes and Beats of the Indian Carnatic Jazz (EM re) NEW 230:-
This time we're off to Madras 1969 to hear legendary south Indian film music composer/director, T.K. Ramamoorthy's. A daring fusion of Carnatic music and jazz. Although jazz musicians had been using Indian elements before this time, Fabulous Notes was the first recording in which accomplished Indian musicians adopted jazz elements. And these are accomplished musicians indeed, veterans of the demanding Indian film music studios, trained in the strict discipline of the traditional Carnatic system, led by the visionary Ramamoorthy, a legendary composer who collaborated with M. S. Viswanathan in providing soundtracks for more than 700 films. The music here is a true Indian music, adhering to traditional Carnatic ragas with their varying ascending and descending modes, using a wide range of Indian instruments in an appealing fusion with jazz instruments, ideas and rhythms. The result is not a slavish imitation of modish Western styles, but a stimulating and surprising new entity; fans of later Ethio-jazz may well experience a frisson of familiarity at certain moments when listening to these recordings. Famed composer Ramamoorthy is also a masterful arranger and orchestrator, giving us surprising vistas of timbre, allowing instruments to come to the fore, supported in appealing combinations. But the true heart of both Carnatic music and jazz is improvisation, and TKR allows these fine players space within the relatively brief to make their own statements within the ragas, as detailed in the the liner notes accompanying this reissue. What we hear is a new meeting of worlds, both sharing a respect for the primacy of improvisation, a love for the intricacies of ensemble playing, and a fine understanding of the power of propulsive yet sophisticated rhythms. Fabulous Notes reveals a true Indian music, not merely Occidental music with hints of Indo-spice. We can picture the recording sessions, with the musicians seated on the floor of the studio, Indian musicians playing Indian music, playing jazz, playing Fabulous Notes And Beats Of The Indian Carnatic - Jazz.

V/A: BOLLYWOOD BLOODBATH 2Xlp (FK UK re) NEW 250:-
This musical mausoleum of malformed freak funk and dreadful discothèque pop has been resurrected from the maligned cinematic subculture of Bombay's bloodthirsty horror film industry. Bollywood Bloodbath features India's finest composers, such as Bappi Lahiri, R.D Burman, Sonik Omi, Sapan Jogmohan and Laxmikant Pyarelal making the kind of radical risk-rock that would under normal circumstances have studio security escorting these overworked maestros off set for a well-earned break or a relaxing exorcism. Take all the most oblique, indigenous characteristics of your favourite Bollywood musicals then condense them into a bubbling serum and watch the Jekyll and Hyde transformation commence as these A-list composers create bloodcurdling B-Music for the films they never thought the outernationals would see or hear. You've heard Italy's most famous composers when they soundtrack unwatchable Roman slasher flicks with on their own uncompromised and underpaid terms? Well that blueprint just turned blood red with sub-shoestring, low-budget studio wizards gambling with rigamortis rock, disjointed disco and low-voltage electronics for seldom screened scenes of desi Draculas, lycanthropic lady killers and psyched-up swamp monsters. Ever wondered what the DJ would play in a 1981 luxury hotel that was built on an ancient Christian cemetery? No? Well it sounds like someone just got possessed by Jimmy Page and Nile Rodgers at the same time. But sance fiction aside the factual history of the unravelled Bollywood horror phenomena is fully re-exhumed with this compendium. Carefully documenting the drummy theme from the first-ever 1949 Indian ghost film this benchmark collection follows the sinister lineage as directors of bloody thrillers take chances on shuddering synopsis and haywire sonic special effects. Leading up to the inauguration of the notorious Ramsay Bros film company (whose sibling revelry in the 70s and 80s lead to the inclusion of flight-style puke bags in participating picture houses) this compilation pulls no punches and plunges the 'B' of Bombay into the heart of the b-movie and squirts a masala of bloody ketchup and red wine onto the sets of Bollywood's glorious filmic musicals. Licensed exclusively from the independent Indian film music companies (revealing incidental tracks that they didnt even know they owned)”

V/A: TUMBÉLÉ! 2Xlp (Soundway re) M-/M- 200:-
Biguine, Afro & Latin Sounds from the French Caribbean, 1963-74'. A look at the unique and overlooked sounds from the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. Lilting biguines, heavy gwo ka drums and tumbélé rhythms collide with the sounds of the carnival. Haitian, Congolese and Puerto Rican influences are added to the pot in a percussive celebration of Afro-Caribbean spirit. Often overlooked in the English speaking Caribbean, the scattering drums and soaring clarinets of the biguine ruled the airwaves and dancefloors of Martinique and Guadeloupe in the 1960s. This album showcases the vibrancy of the scene on the islands in the 60s and 70s - a scene that would go on to develop the all-conquering sound of zouk in the '80s. Uptown bands like Ensemble La Perfecta and Les Loups Noirs combine heavy rhythms and psychedelic effects in an inimitable style - check out the crazed Jet Biguine for a better idea! The deep and introspective sounds of Monsieur Dolor and Guadeloupean hero Robert Loison show the deep African roots of the music - songs born out of the plantations, with an insistent rhythm and mournful vocals that are unique to these islands. Overlooked outside of Paris, Montreal and the French Caribbean for many years, this collection redresses the balance by presenting the vital sounds of Martinique and Guadeloupe - missing pieces of the musical jigsaw puzzle of the Caribbean.
