AFRO PROMO (Other Cinema US) M/M 160:-
Oh yeah! Alternatively trashy and poignant – and sometimes just plain hard to believe these days – here’s an irresistible program of Black Cinema trailers that trace its evolution through its most crucial period, 1946-1976. Filled with insights on race and social dynamics, this fascinating compendium of Coming Attractions explores an extensive range of stylistic approaches – Blaxploitation, Comedy, Music Bio, Plantation Drama, and more – all smartly organized by genre, or viewable as one outrageous joyride through motion picture history. Beyond mere camp, these marvelously condensed gems crystallize a range of African-American identities and personalities, tracking the meteoric careers of Sidney Poitier, James Earl Jones, Billy Dee Williams, Richard Pryor, Pam Grier, et al, through their bold performances in movies both hugely popular and practically forgotten. Be careful or you just might learn something. “A sometimes funny, sometimes frightening look at Tinseltown’s presentation of Blacks.” – Edward Marguiles, Movieline “Offers considerable fun, and food for thought.” – Dennis Harvey, Variety “A picture tells a thousand words, but a shameless movie trailer can say even more.” – Barry Walters, SF Examiner

THE FILMS OF KENNETH ANGER VOL ONE (Fantomas US) NEW 279:-
Cinematic magiacian, legendary provocateur, author of the infamous HOLLYWOOD BABYLON books and creator of some of the most striking and beautiful works in the history of film, Kenneth Anger is a singular figure in post-war American culture. A major influence on everything from the films of Martin Scorsese, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and David Lynch to the pop art of Andy Warhol to MTV, Anger's work serves as a talisman of universal symbols and personal obsession, combining myth, artifice and ritual to render cinema with the power of a spell or incantation. THE BEATLES – HELP! (Apple EU) M/M 130:-

EXPERIMENTS IN TERROR (Other Cinema US) M/M 160:-
As if by some irresistible compulsion to witness the mortification of the flesh, EXPERIMENTS IN TERROR perversely unearths a celluloid sarcophagus of horrible, horrible beauty...a phantasmagoria of the uncanny, the dreadful, and the macabre...a pathological delirium of witchcraft, phantoms, and the undead. Using visionary cinematography and a masterful montage of rare film artifacts, these amoral auteurs probe every dark corner of the human psyche, with morbid curiosity and in lurid detail! This shocking program explodes the genre of the horror film, profoundly expanding the cinematic language of fear.

MASTERS APPRENTICES: FULLY QUALIFIED DVD NEW 230:-
REGION 0, PAL. Comprehensive DVD on Australia's own Masters Apprentices featuring newly created documentary, film clips and Abbey Road revisited. 'Fully Qualified' takes you on an amazing journey from suburban Adelaide in the early 1960's to the world of puffy shirts, leather, long hair, drugs, groupies and manager exploitation. Theirs was a life of screaming fans, furious days and even wilder nights. It was all fame and no fortune back then, and the band eventually came to an end in London, penniless after years at the top. However, the Masters Apprentices had unwittingly blazed a trail for all those who would follow, and had lived by their anthem 'Do what you want to do, be what you want to be' - the Masters Apprentices, Australian rock 'n' roll royalty.

MUSICAL BROTHERHOODS FROM TRANS-SAHARAN HIGWAY (SS US) NEW 220-

This is some of the last great street music on Earth. A must-see for string aficionados looking for inspiration as electric ouds, banjos, mandolins and the Gnawa sentir peel flesh from bone right before your eyes! Color; 60 minutes; digipak; all-region DVD; NTSC format.

THE PINK FLOYD AND SYD BARRETT STORY 2xDVD box (Zeit Media) NEW 299:-
From the late '60s to the early '70s, Pink Floyd grew from a British experimental rock band exploring the outer edges of the psychedelic experience to one of the world's most popular and revered rock groups. But one of the group's key members didn't last the full ride with the band -- Syd Barrett, the songwriter and singer who sparked the group's early hits and led the charge on their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, descended into an introspective madness which was compounded by his ravenous enthusiasm for LSD. The Pink Floyd & Syd Barrett Story is a documentary which examines Pink Floyd's first flash of fame, Barrett's rise and tragic fall, and how the group moved on without him while acknowledging his influence on the album Wish You Were Here. The documentary features rare performance footage, interviews with David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Roger Waters, and memories from a handful of friends and associates of the band. Beautiful deluxe box-set.

THE 70s DIMENSION (Other Cinema US) M/M 160:-
Time Warp! Here's a media-archaeological treasure trove of 16mm commercials, PSA’s, and TV ephemera from that delirious decade of polyester and smiley faces. From the classic iconography of the Marlboro Man to the absurd pitches for Jack LaLanne's "Glamour Stretchers", this outrageously retro review of candy-colored clips offers more than campy fun. In fact, it allows us precious insight into a lost, impossibly innocent world of fondly remembered looks, styles, and attitudes, from way back in the good ol' 20th Century. The B-side of our disc is an amazing display of "recombinant" editing and audio design. Six of today's savviest celluloid scavengers take disposable industrial and educational films, and recycle them into uncanny collages, from the ridiculous to the sublime. “This fun disc of vintage cultural esoterica is one long smiley-face flashback.” - Dennis Harvey, Variety “From quaint to camp to absurd to preposterous, these pop-ephemera artifacts invariably pose the same puzzling question: What were they thinking?” - Russ Forster, 8-Track Mind

Drawn from his extensive 16mm film archives, this polymorphous program promises a pulsating panorama of perverse pleasures that includes home movies, hillbilly porn, cartoon smut, commercials, trailers, educationals, hygiene films, burlesque bits, peep show loops, and oozing oodles more!

SUMATRAN FOLK CINEMA (SS US) NEW  220:-
A film by Mark Gergis and Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls), Sumatran Folk Cinema is a psychedelic collage of images and sounds from the heart and soul of the island's culture with the main focus on music. Witness classic dangdut rock music, street and country scenes, raw TV excerpts, Minang orchestras, night markets, a variety of folk musicians, audio/visual artifacts and much more wrapped in a 60 minute kaleidoscope complete with an epic soundtrack. Sumatra is the northwestern entry point to the Indonesian archipelago. Its 40 million inhabitants are primarily Muslim and speak the national language of Bahasa Indonesian. Most of the film was shot during a span of two weeks in August of 2004 in and around the cities of Medan, Padang, Bukitinggi, and Padang Panjang. It features a variety of street musicians, nightclub acts, folk groups, and incidental happenings that surround musicians in their daily lives. This film has no narration nor is it meant to express any particular theme or agenda. This is intuitive folk cinema and film collage, shot on location as it unfolded and assembled in an attempt to capture the essence of being there. All material was shot before the "Tsunami" of December 26, 2004 destroyed the city of Banda Aceh and the northwestern coastal areas of Aceh province. The Bandah Aceh segment was shot by David Martinez in 2003. The additional footage of the GAM (Free Aceh movement) rebels ambushing a government motorcade was filmed by Billy Nessen in 2001. GAM has since declared peace with the Indonesian government, given up their weapons and filtered back into Aceh society. All region DVD contains bonus footage of musical performances and trailer segment. Color; 60 minutes; digipak; NSTC format.

TRIBULATIONS 99 (Other Cinema US) M/M 160:-
Upon its release in 1991, TRIBULATION 99 became an instant counter-culture classic. Baldwin’s “pseudo-pseudo-documentary” presents a factual chronicle of US intervention in Latin America in the form of the ultimate far-right conspiracy theory, combining covert action, environmental catastrophe, space aliens, cattle mutilations, killer bees, religious prophecy, doomsday diatribes, and just about every other crackpot theory broadcast through the dentures of the modern paranoiac. A delirious vortex of hard truths, deadpan irony, and archival mash-ups – industrials, graphs, cartoons, movies from Hollywood B to Mexican Z – TRIBULATION 99 constructs a truly perverse vision of American imperialism. Also! Two early rarities from Baldwin: ROCKETKITKONGOKIT: This kaleidoscopic collage-essay traces an alternative history of post-colonial Congo, the CIA, and military adventurism. WILD GUNMAN: A dense montage of cowboy iconography, advertising campaigns and pop culture imagery within an interactive penny-arcade game. “One of the most exhilarating underground movies in recent years… A relentlessly lurid agitprop for the cyberpunk generation.” - Jim Hoberman, Premiere Magazine “An unparalleled achievement in wicked social satire.” - Michael Atkinson, Film Comment “Like speed spiked with an LSD chaser!” - Manohla Dargis, Village Voice

TRAD GRAS och STENAR: Från Moja till Minneapolis (Gashud SW) NEW 160:-
Trad Gras och Stenar have their origin in the legendary Swedish psychedelic/experimental bands Pärson Sound / International Harvester / Harvester who started playing in 1967. The band dissolved in 1972 but reunited in 1995, ready for new adventures and they never ever lost the spirit. They still rank as one of the most amazing contemporary psych bands worldwide. During 2002-05, Mikael Hogstrom and his video camera accompanied their gigs. As time went on, it turned into a little project. Mikael showed the band his latest clips and under their merciless eyes and ears, those clips slowly developed into this DVD. The amazing footage and sound documents the band performing in Sweden, USA and Russia. It also contains recordings from other cameras and sound recorders, including a few glimpses from the bands old 8mm movies – an echo from the past. An amazing psychedelic journey in sounds and sights. Time 118 min + extra bonus 3 min 21 sec. with old film clips from 1970. 4:3 NTSC PCM Stereo Region: 0 DVD 9 Double Layer.

ANDY WARHOL: THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO (re) NEW 180:-
The band sets up in Warhol's Factory studio and plays a 50-minute free-form psychedelic jam until the cops arrive and shut it down. This is followed by a swirling, acid-damaged 25-minute montage of images from one of their "Exploding Plastic Inevitable" happenings, which is in turn followed by a very short and very Warholian slice-of-life.

ANDY WARHOL: POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL  new 180:-
Probably Edie Sedgwick's best known film, this 1965 production takes place entirely in her apartment. Andy and Gerard shot 2 reels as Edie lays on her bed, talks on the phone and walks about her room, showing off her clothes and describing how she spent her entire inheritance in 6 months. When the film was processed it was discovered to be completely out of focus, so they reshot, adding to the first reel so that the first 33 minutes are completely out of focus as Edie wakes up, orders coffee and orange juice, smokes, exercises, takes pills and puts on makeup, all in silence except for the background music of an Everly Brothers album.

ANDY WARHOL: VINYL new 180:-
Starring Edie Sedgwick, Gerard Malanga, John McDermott and Ondine, this 1966 film was Warhol's interpretation of "A Clockwork Orange," with Malanga as a juvenile delinquent with brilliant lines like "Yeah, I'm a J.D., so what." Digital remaster from the original film negative, B&W, 70 minutes

XPERIMENTAL EROS (Other Cinema US) M/M 160:-
Exploring realms both sacred and profane, XPERIMENTAL EROS invokes a shimmering fantasia of celluloid sensuality for the pleasure of our largest sex organ — the brain. Using exotic tropes and erotic footage from the world’s oldest genre, our program of ardent auteurs spin grindhouse dross into arthouse gold with perverse panache. Be it tales of sexual obsession, rejected letters to Penthouse Forum, or the Mr. Nude Trucker Contest of 1976, no subject is taboo... nor above deconstruction. X-EROS strips bare the spectacle of sex in cinema, poeticizing the cinematic language of the body. “The images of XPERIMENTAL EROS mingle in the mind like one’s own flashes of memory and fantasy. A fragment of an act, a snippet of sound – all play, replay, recombine and again, please! – for a collection of works that are confoundingly X-citing!” — Lisa Vandever, Cinekink Film Festival.
