Here is one of the most improbable lives of the twentieth century: a blind and homeless man who became the most famous eccentric in New York and who, with enormous diligence, rose to prominence as an internationally respected music presence. Born Louis Thomas Hardin in 1916, Moondog first made an impression in the late 1940s when he became a mascot of The New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall. His unique, melodic compositions were released on the Prestige jazz label. In the late 1960s the Viking-garbed Moondog was a pop music sensation on Columbia Records. Moondog has been noted most recently as an inspiration for the contemporary experimental folk movement. Moondog's compositional style influenced his former roommate, Philip Glass, whose Preface and performances of Moondby Isis Aquarianog works appear in the book. It's Tom Blake's remembrances of his years living in Honolulu, Hawaii. It's loaded with classic oldtime pictures of Hawaii's "golden era" before the towering hotels and car chocked streets took over. This is truly a "surf classic" written by a surfer who was already considered a legend. Tom Blake is excellent... a must for all those who have made the journey, or have just dreamed about it.

SC 31x40 cm o.pp. Chris Boot Ltd. 2004 Limited edition of 500 copies. Iin plastic golden slipcase. The Watches publication was made as Martin's gift to festivalgoers... copies were distributed as part of the welcome pack to participants, and given away to visitors to the Arles festival office during the opening week. This is what he had to say in the Arles catalogue: "I have long been fascinated by the way photography and society interact. We are bombarded with images every day and most of these are on billboards, magazines and even objects. Over the years I have collected various forms of vernacular photography such as postcards, but more recently have expanded this collecting into objects. "Most of these watches originate from Iraq where many versions of watches with photographic portraits of Saddam have been manufactured. Some of these are expensive Swiss made watches while some are relatively cheap. Saddam also had a penchant for giving away watches to both foreign guests and his own Republican Guard. The final watches are anti Saddam ones made and produced in the USA." The watches mainly came from Iraqi markets, gathered not by Martin but by his photojournalism colleagues in Magnum at Martin's request. Some came from ebay. I think he may have had one or two from before the recent invasion of Iraq, but the vast majority were acquired in the last year.
